Ten bodies of children were found in the water outside Western Sahara yesterday. Authorities in Morocco believe that they were on their way to Canary islands when the boat wrecked. It has become more and more common to send away children as it is more difficult to send them back than adults, says Alter Forum organisation in Morocco

This is terrible. May these poor children's souls rest in perfect peace.

And EU remains stone-cold. I hate their politics as much as I hate the corrupt African politics.

When I first read it in my morning newspaper it was only a few lines about the tragedy. I made some saarching but coul not find any other article to verify it.
The link below is from the net version and a bit longer, but only in Swedish. At least some of you can read it.

Their sources are TT, a Swedish news agency and AFP, french I think. Hopefully itīs true, or should I say, I hope itīs NOT true.

kiwi, thanks for the DN link.
One of Denmarks Radio (DR) TV reporters has just been in Senegal where she made three programmes about the migration issue that were shown on the 22, 24 and 27th of this month. Those of you who can read Danish will find this link interesting: http://www.dr.dk/Nyheder/Udland/2006/11/27/112507.htm

Senegalese mothers who lost their children in trying to reach Europe have now started campaigns to discourage the youth not to risk their lives in these dangerous journeys.

Kiwi01 thanks you for sending in English link.
The whole affair is a travesty how Western Sahara or the Morroccan authorities allow unaccompanied minors to be trafficked the Canaries. More pressure should be placed on the Morrccan Authorities to implement more stringent penalities on child traffickers and to intensify surviellence of their coastline to intercept these boats.

This situation is terrible a viable solution needs to be found. It seems as though over fishing in Sengambian waters has killed off the fishing industry in Senegal leading to whole communities of young men willing to gamble their lives to reach the Canary islands. The EU needs to do more to look at the cause of this issue instead of just clamping down on economic migrants. The whole visa issue needs to be looked at again after all if one knocks on the door iin the right manner and gets refused depending on His/her determination they will find another way to get in.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/5328142.stm

Yes dreadfully sad news.

I have been fearing something like this would happen ever since I heard it reported on the World Service that Spain has a duty to educate all children who turn up unaccompanied on its shores.

The desperation of the families who are prepared to put their children at such huge risk for what the hope is the chance of a better life can only be imagined by someone like me (white, European, educated).

As for the governments (both in Europe and West Africa) that continue to 'apply sticking plaster solutions to huge gaping wounds' - shame on them!

Yes sister a solution needs to be found. That solution will need the will and determination of all sides.

Sadly I fear things are going to get MUCH worse before they get better.
