Mbay, sorry I can't help you with more informations about the Gambian government than Sab already gave. But I would like to know which evidence the German authorities can produce that this woman is planning a circumcision in Gambia. If they have good reasons, I would even support them in their attempt to save the girl's health. If it is just chicanery it can be stopped. Your friend could ask organisations like PRO ASYL or the Ausländerbeirat of the city council.
Sab, thank you; I will try to get the book! I share your doubts that a change will come soon, but now important steps are done, and this development will proceed. As jambo said: FGM means money for many old women. Therefore banning it is not enough. Some other African countries (e.g. Mali) showed that with the help of NGOs it is possible to compensate the old ladies' losses and even integrate them into the process once they realise that FGM is unhealthy.

Hi Mbay, You created a duplicate thread. That is the reason why the other one is locked with a reference to this thread. |

Sigh! It looks as if the fight against FGM also attracts those who abuse it. It was/is the same with child abuse: When public awareness raised about the problem, stupid and unscrupulous women used it as a weapon in their divorce wars. They falsely accuse their (ex-)husbands of child abuse and don't care about the consequences for both, men and children. By doing this, they also endanger the victims of real abuse, because the judges now are having doubts about the nature of every case. It looks as if men (or lawyers?) now discovered FGM as a weapon. |

did i get you well that she is the one who is cousing all this noise? if it is so you are taking a wrong thought.then she even give him the child to educated her through the girls grandma here in germany but she never know that they planed a big coup . they are divorced now for two years the ex husband had never have problems with mother to took her to the Gambia as well as years before and there was no singly problems between both about the girl but since she gives him upbringing or breeding(gemeinsame Erziehung) then the trouble started in the same week. when she asks him why so after so many years he tell straight head that he will finished her as she finished him because she left him for another man.beleive me this case is dirty !is it worthy to do this to girl age off eight years? the girl missed her grandma and the others including my own daughter at the same age in the Gambia so much .when my daughter visited us here we need to hide her from the girl that she don't get more confusion. this is not a story but realty and sady.

| No, no, Mbay - I mean HE is abusing FGM! I don't know why the authorities (Jugendamt in cooperation with Ausländeramt?) don't question the point that almost the very day the husband got the permission to care for his daughter (Gemeinsames Sorgerecht) he came up with his accusations. I don't know the case, but maybe someone could tell the husband that he is going to destroy his own child for a stupid revenge. But unscrupulous people, and I fear he is one of them, don't care about this. |

sorry for my misunderstanding. indeed this has hurt the girl more than the mother and us all. the jugendamt didn't trust him either that's why they refused him to get complate sorgerecht as they also see that he has just wait to get that sorgerecht but they said she have to Prof this to them which is hard. thanky for your care.

| Update: This week I found an article about the conference in German magazine 'Der Spiegel' (49/2006). It was written by the Egyptian 'Spiegel' correspondent, Amira El Ahl, and is worth reading! |

| True, Mbay, I almost couldn't stand the description and stopped reading from time to time. Imagine, every third girl dies from a 'Pharaonic' circumcision. It is unbelievable. |

Momodou, what Fuambai Sia Ahmadu (your first link) says about FGM may be right for the less brutal practice of certain regions. I don't want to join the hysterical crowd of certain anti-FGM activists, and I know how sensible the topic is. But I can't imagine that the 'Pharaonic' circumcision in special is physically and psychologically healthy for the girls. Sorry, but for me this remains to be truely perverted. And I think under such grave circumstances, if it is really true that one third of the girls doesn't even survive the circumsision, cultural/ethnical sensitivities are inadequate.
You know that I love and respect the African/Gambian culture and that I am not at all out for its destruction. |
