Seconded Njucks a National Travel Agency is a great idea. As for a National Airline being to expensive and I don't really expect it to be financed by government but by the private sector. If anything Top officials could hire their own plane for a official business. I suspect that's what most Heads of States' and their Top officials do. In order them to have up to 100 kg worth of excess baggage for their entourage. These sweeteners offered specific airlines and their cronies shouldn't lol officials into a false sense of security. As we all are aware you don't always get something for nothing by giving monopolies preferenial treatment the government enables momopolisers to keep their monopoly intact. In other words excess bagage tips for the priviledged few are holding travellerss to and from Gambia at ransom with a messley baggage allowances of between 20-25kg. And to make matters worse people who bring over charitable donations for schools and hospitals are given 5kg extra baggage allowances. If they are lucky and charged import duty on the ground.
Njucks your Ryanair suggestion is a good idea. quote:
hence people can book cheaply through Ryanair for 5 Euro to Amsterdam and then board a flight 30mins later to banjul.
Senarata I'm glad your sister enjoyed her holidays, years ago three of my siblings were on their skiing holidays in Austria and got a hostile welcome by the hosts. I suspect they weren't used to seeing Black faces around the place. No excuse
Kons your keep up the humour you should be on the stand-up circuit.
Peace

| Sorry Sister, for your siblings' bad experience. Certain regions of Austria are really backward and racist. Not quite as bad as Eastern Germany (hey, does anybody want to buy the former GDR? We sell it at a very good price!), but... I have relatives in Austria (my grandma was Austrian), that's why I know the country quite well. |

i found the Austrians nice and very cultured too. but the gambians i met there were in a constant state of fear and many complained of severe racism both from ordinary people and from the police/institutions. i also sensed a strong anti-turkish feeling which i think is more than racism but historical as well. its serious.
my view was Austria is perhas were Britain was in the 1970s with race issues. it will grow out of it, its inevitable.
the GDR is for sale?? |

Are you interested? Heureka, one at least...!!
I hope EUROPE will grow out of its racism... I agree, it is inevitable. Still politicians and their mouthpieces, the tabloids, profit from xenophobia and racism, but this won't last very long.

| The problem with Ryanair is that they donīt use big international airports lika Schiphol in Amsterdam because they are too expensive. As far as I know they donīt go to Amsterdam at all. They only approaches small low fee airports far from cities, in UK it is Stanstedt, far from Gatwick and Heathrow. |

KIWI that true, but there is some politics in it too as its not because its too expensive but becuase the big airlines lobby to have them out.
for example Ryanair doesnt go to Amsterdam Schiphol but Easyjet does!! but then Easyjet is slightly more expensive to prove your point.
however if KLM started coming to Banjul and use these cheap airlines to get people to Amsterdam then wouldnt we all be smiling.
i think the government has to try and woo the KLM, Lufthansas etc . cost will go down if traffic increases. |

I think the question is do the government really have the know how to change things ? The government should seriously consider training its officers to keep them up-to-date with current trends within the industry. It isn't enough for them just to attend the WTM year after year because there doesn't seem to be much improvements in the quality of their performance, products and services. Unless there is a shake up within the framework of the GTA this stagnation will continue.
