Eleven years have passed since the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa (the avatar)on 10th November 1995.R.I.P. A year has gone by since I was rudely roused from my bed and clamped into detention. Sixty-five days in chains, weeks of starvation, months of mental torture and recently, the rides in a steaming, airless Black Maria to appear before a kangaroo court, dubbed a special military tribunal, where the proceedings leave no doubt that the judgement has been written in advance....The men who ordain and supervise this show of shame, this tragic charade, are frightened by the word, the power of ideas, the power of the pen; by the damands of social justice and the rights of man. Nor do they have a sense of history. They are so scared of the power of the word, that they do not read. And that is their funeral.
From a letter written to his son Ken Wiwa.

Remembered also are the soldiers murdered in The Gambia on 11th November 1994. Rest in peace.

Sab,

i just followed the links to a guy you supported greatly in this forum. If the dead truly were able to hear, see and appear back to their loved ones, Ken would show-up to you once in a life time.

I tell you, one thing i like- your consistent struggle!! Thanks for a good refreshment piece.

Rest in Peace Ken!!

Yes!! With Steve, you got my tears rolling my cheek.

His death, going by one of your postings in this forum didn't come to light till 27 yrs after it happened.
But sure his going lead to the liberation of South Africans from the clutches of Botha, and mean space creatures.

Rest in peace Steve, and the many others.

A piece that attacked my emotions was written after the death of Deyda Hydara. It came from a man, who as a youth had been given a chance to write the youth column by the late Deyda Hydara - I believe it was carried on this (old) forum, but definately the press. Do you remember it?
regards,

If i remember well, you are referring to Jawara MA. He lives in Seattle, WA, USA.

Actually, he was greatly inspired by Deyda. Search under his name, you should be able to see parts 1 & 2 in the old forum.

Many a times, they are unknown. I didn't know his life struggles till i spotted his name in this forum.

His legacy lives after him.

Thanks, yes under posting 'How a fallen hero has changed someones life'.

With regard to the late Steve Biko, his daughter has recently written; While the world has looked to South Africa for lessons. I remain disturbed by the faintness of the name of Biko among young South Africans.

Steve Biko 1946 - 1977 - He was banned in 1973 by the government, which prohibited him from speaking in public, writing for publication and any travel. He was arrested in Sept 77' and died in detention, naked and manacled, from extensive brain damage, six days later. His death caused international protests and a UN arms embargo. An inquest in the late 1980's found no one responsible for his death, but in 1997 five former policemen admitted being involved.

This week in The Voice - www.voice-online.co.uk reports that there have been 2,200 people die in custody in the UK since 1995.
More than the lives lost through terrorism in the UK!

Wow it's 11 years ago since we protested as students on the streets of london and launched campaigns to boycott of shell to stop the destruction of the Ogoni of the Niger Delta. As we grieved for Ken Saro Wiva who faced the butcher Abacha firing squads for his fight against social and environmental justice. Oh Brother Ken Saro wiva the struggle continues may you rest in perfect peace.

Peace

Sister Omega.
