In the uk there is alot of concern about bird flu at the moment. It seems to be slowly spreading.
The recent deaths in Turkey made me wonder about the implications for The Gambia, where chickens run freely in very close proximity to people.
In the uk there are government plans that if it comes here ALL birds will have to be brought undercover (no more free range) OR culled. Also they have stock piles of vaccines (thought they arent sure it will be the right one or that it will work!)
Has the Gambian government got any provisions and an emergency plan? IF it took hold in Gambia it could be a disaster.
If you have Gambian family at home the main advice is not to eat the flesh from sick chickens. I am not a medical person, but I understand that the children that died in Turkey had eaten the meat from sick birds. Their poor mother is grief stricken and guilt ridden.
Can anyone else shed any more light on this or give any more advice for people to pass on to their family in Gambia?
I have read on internet today that bird flu has reached Nigeria. I am still concerned about Gambia and what will happen if it reaches the villages. Does the government have any emergency plan in place?
it is also worth reading the analysis and background from the left side column.
personally i have no doubt that it will reach all countries in the world within the next few months especially as the spring cause large numbers of birds to migrate long distances infecting local populations at each place they stop for a rest.
