ALLEGED ATTACK BY REBELS IN BINJONA
By Jaluma Vierra - Bissau Correspondent
Recently there has been an alleged attack on the village of Binjona, in the southern region of Senegal by gunmen.
According to residents of this village who spoke to this reporter, the gunmen came late at night and opened fire. They also explained that there gunmen attacked places such as a petrol station and took with them 3,000,000 CFA.
People who spoke to this reporter also said there was a military vehicle which was set on fire by these gunmen. This recent attack has made many people in the area to be left with no option but to flee the area. They told this reporter that it is a common phenomenon in the area as they are sometimes attacked on the way to refugee camps by unknown people who ask them to either surrender their money or risk loosing their lives.
It would be remembered that few months ago there was heavy fighting between rebels in the Casamance region and the army in Guinea Bissau. This has caused those rebels who were loyal to Salif Sarjo to move away from the Senegalese-Guinean border. Reports also continue to indicate that rebels are now getting closer to the Gambian border.
Recently it has also been reported that the Senegalese army was engaged in fierce fighting with these rebels in the bush. The information this received indicates that many people have in fact left their homes and properties to flee for their lives.

Gambia's envoy to the UN failed to mention this problem in his last UN address and I had thought that perhaps the matter is in the hands of a smaller world body, the ECOWAS. There are refugees in the Gambia and so many more brothers' mouths to feed.....
Where can the matter get the most effective attention that those who struggle for their rights, deserve?
Even Taiwan is much further away

I always said that I'll eat my hat if the cancer of civil war in West Africa would not catch the Senegambian region. Civil wars in Africa are too profitable for certain people...
Does anybody know where the Casamance rebels get their money from? |

Cornelius, that's a valid point: "Gambia's envoy to the UN failed to mention this problem in his last UN address!" I wonder why it was oversigthed and not considered a threat within the sub-region and Gambia's stability? |

One of the things that Gambia has managed to do with great success, which many other countries in Africa have not managed is to have, PEACE,OK there are many other problems in the Gambia that's true but to lose PEACE would be to lose everything |

Have you any evidence or stories that this is a fact? |

The fact of the matter is that Casamance borders the Gambia based on the regular reports of refugees when fighting erupts featured through Bantaba. We are always updated through reports. Refer back to previous topics!
Salifu Sarjo the rebel leader mentioned under the report for this topic was lodged sometimes ago at Atlantic Hotel or formerly Copthorne Hotel. Gambia and Casamance are conjoined also in a sense between very closed ethnic groups accross the border. The Casamnace borders are very fragile and easily infiltrated for The country.

Yes I know Kobo, but perhaps I mistook the meaning you were trying to convey in your piece,by implying that the Refugees brought with them undesireable elements, was I mistaken in that assumption? |

No worries. Am not sure about undesirable elements or harbouring rebels but politically Gambia is in the heart of the crises!
All refugees settled down safely and given land, food and shelter. They easily integrate with the society PEACEFULLY! |
