One idea that is being tried in countries like India is to provide meals for young children in school to encourage them to go to school. It also tells parents that it is more profitable to send young children to school instead of using them for child labor.

Has there been a discussion of the idea in Gambia?

In nurserys food is provided by the world food programme or whatever it is called! The dinner ladies work for nothing, or for a free meal and most. The food is basic, but it is an encouragement.

But after that the children have to PAY for lunch. Those whose parents dont pay dont eat! It would be a big encouragement if the children were fed daily for free.

Hmmm. Paying for lunch is not much of a program. The idea is to provide a filling lunch so kids have some incentive to stay and learn in school. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-day_meals for experiences with the program in India.

Nice initiative from Naomi – taken from Getsuk.org newsletter earlier this year.
Naomi is sixteen & organising a Mufti day at her school that will involve two charities working in The Gambia. GTS (Gambia Tourist Support) & GETSuk.org (Gambia Education & Teaching Support) with a borrowed camcorder from her school she will be recording some Gambian sights whilst in The Gambia during the Easter holidays. On her return from The Gambia, Naomi will make a presentation to the school as a contribution of her Fundraising role. This has seen a whooping £500 collected, towards the feeding programme and teachers wage increment for Bakoteh Nursery School. Good initiative Naomi, well done.

Very best wishes and good luck with the GCSE’s.

Not to rain on parade congratulation Naomi's using her iniative to fundraise for Mufti Primary School. However Enpowering the community by supporting income generating schemes for families to be able to send their children to school with dinner money is better in the long-term for the self-esteem of the children and families concerned.

Peace

You can find details on Naomi's school web
www.kingarthurs.somerset.sch.uk/ then go to Activities.
Apologies for the long delay......
Are you part of 'geologossinfronteras.org that is seeking projects in The Gambia?

Fine, thanks Jambo. Having a pleasant restful read through.
Browsing couple of weeks back I see you were requesting info on Mali, are you off to The Festival in The Desert? I tried to find the posting again, but it became too time consuming.
regards,

sab, thank you. I sent an introductory note to the school. I hope to hear from them soon.

I'm not familiar with geologossinfronteras.org. I checked their web site but wasn't able to understand the nature of their work primarily because I don't understand Spanish. I welcome your insights.
