While Dr Jammeh continues to be notoriously known the world over for his clowning, Gambians suffer the butt of his jokes among our peers in the sub-region and the world at large for having such an imbecile at the pinacle of power.
Arresting and incarcerating the NADD political trio for causing the border conflict is not only outrightly outrageous but also exposed the gullibility of Jammeh, his corhorts as well as the intelligence service. The border conflict between Senegal and The Gambia was started by no other than Jammeh and his close circle. They chose to increas the ferry tarrifs for no other reason than to provoke Senegal and to test her patience, owing to various political arguements and disagreement between the two nations. The tension was so intensed that bilateral relationships between the two nations was almost non-existent.
Boy did they(the Jammeh vous) hit the wrong button when they declared the increase in tarrifs!!! The Senegalese reacted with sheer vehemence by closing all border posts between the two nations, halt all transit and began to amass their side of the border with military personnel and arsenal. The heads of the Gambian authorities begin to get sore from continueous scratching and hairs turned grey overnight. How did they react?. They shamelessly run to old Oba(Obasanjo of Nigeria) crying, "help Oga, Dakar don wan kill us all now, now, now". As usual he gave in to their cry of help and promised to mediate.
While old Oba was still on the phone line to Dakar, Jammeh hilariously sent a truckload of rice to the Senegalese authorities as a peace offering to calm the wrath of Dakar. Tell me this man is not a comic genius!!. Talk about the quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Yes, give the fuming Senegalese authorities plenty of "cheb" and they would forget the whole incident ever took place. The Senegalese ofcourse rejected it flatly.
It is not as if The Gambia has no right to increase ferry tarrifs within her border, far from it, she damn well has every right to do so. The Gambian authorities could have cited sharp surge in world oil prices, the increased cost of purchasing and maintainig new ferries and the cost of recruiting staff among other things. The big deal was that they should have informed and negotiate with the Senegalese authorities regarding any change in tarrifs as stated by the ECOWAS protocol and similar Senegambian treaties.. The stance taken by the Senegalese was only justified by this simple rule of diplomacy. One could not help but wonder how the hell did all those so called seasoned Gambian diplomats and intellectuals within the Jammeh regime could have overlooked this abc of international relations. Where are the Fatoumatta Jahumpa "Einstein" Ceesays or Jali Yankouba "Mr Bookman" Tourays when you need them give a sensible advise to their highly unpredictable leader? The only time you seem to hear them is after an unsubstancial damage had been done and fresh wounds opened. Then they begin to patch-up, stitch and weld, bullying and intimidating anyone sane enough to question their judgement. To be continued
