HI Jambo, im off to gambia in November which can't come soon enough with all this cold weather here in the uk. I usually go alone but this time my kids are coming. They are 9 and 12, but so many people have disagreed with taking my kids to Gambia, thinking it is 'too dangerous' for kids. I don't know what anyone else thinks? I think it is fine.

I might go in Oct/Nov but only if I can get something really cheap at the last minute. Am prepared to book the day before if necessary. Who would be the best people to do this through?

check out the pages i have recommended, icelolly.com, charterflights.co.uk if you have accomodation. lastminute.com.
also thomsonfly, co-op travel, first choice. if you can give them a choice of airports you can have a good deal. last time i checked lastminute was offering 279 for 7 days from bristol. but you know how it is that the price screen, final price could be much higher.
What is Gambian experience offering.

Jambo, thanks for your reassurance! We are going for 2 weeks and yes we have already booked it and we got it very cheap 300 pounds each for 2 weeks at the palma rima b&b. Never stayed there before, does anyone know what its like? Im sure it will be very basic, but we won't be there much really.

Formby i would recommend trying Thomas Cook if you want a late deal. Ive just booked a trip to Kos yesterday for next week, only cost 79pounds for a week. But they don't start going to Gambia until November i think. Good luck, i hope u get a good deal and have fun.

Molly, I wouldnt take my daughter to Gambia until she is 18, for several reasons:

1. i dont want her to have lots of unnecessary jabs until her immune system is 'grown up'. There is lots of worries about adolescents having immunisations. I want her body to cope.

2. Emotionally, when I go to the villages you see poverty that in UK we have never experienced. I want her to have the maturity to deal with it compassionately, without being disturbed by it.

3. I want her to have the maturity to be able to deal with the bumsters without getting distressed. eg A guy shouted after me at the beach WOW lovely ass!!!! When I was 16 I would have been upset and frightened by that. At 46 I just shouted back 'thanks, youve made my day!!

If you are going to Gambia with children I think there are several things to be aware of:
1. The current at the beach. They shouldnt swim in the sea out of their depth. Ideally an adult should be in the water. It can be dangerous.
2. The sun. They should NOT be in the sun at the heat of the day (12 - 3).
3. Water. You need to be very careful with children what water supply they use. They need to drink 2 litres a day. I would suggest taking a dehydration sachet every morning as a precautionary measure.
4. Mosquitous. At night children need to cover up and use a spray. When you get home if they have ANY infected bites see your dr about anitbiotics. Also watch for tracking into blood stream for septicemia. If you have any worries visit your GP.
5. Food. You need to check what they are eating and that it is at the correct temp and stored correctly. Food cooked in front of you that is HOT is the best. Hotel buffets, where food is kept warm and may be refrigerated and then served again, could be full of bactereia.

If you jusy stay in Tourist areas I am sure your children could have a very nice holiday. BUT there is always a slight risk of illness.

Personally I dont think Gambia is a good destination for young children. There isnt alot for htem to do, and there could be health hazzards.

Just reread this and it sounds very negative. SORRY. It's just I think of Gambia as an adult holiday destination, not a child friendly holiday. Perhaps I am wrong.
I would take children to Spain and Italy, amongst others. The Latin people adore children and make holidays wonderful by being SO welcoming to them. Watching Italian and Spanish men with their children melts my heart all the time. When I took my daughter to Spain this summer we saw many of these heart warming scenes and I said to her you want to marry a man like that!!!!

I am going to go back in May 2007 I think. Then again at the end of November when I will be taking my daughter, who will be 18 by then. My Gambian friends cant wait to meet her. I think it will be a very emotional trip.
