What are the most prestigious academic competitions in The Gambia? GABECE does not seem popular. How about WASSCE? Is there a nationwide test of any sort? Is there any sense of competition between West African countries for WASSCE honors? Vocabulary tests? What are the most prestigious scholarships? Is it still competition to get into the University of The Gambia?
Do students take SAT, TOEFL or GRE? One way for the best and brilliant Gambian students to understand their world-class credentials is to take such tests. It is very motivational. It quickly shows that any million people have the same potential as any other.
I welcome your insights.

WASSCE is not really competitive, because of the places that practiced in normally private schools. it are not really established on Gambia, in nigeria and ghana it is more established. gambia follows the O and A level system and this is more acceptable. if you have the WASSCE certificate it will depend on the school. The West african international school uses this system but i have not heard of any students from there going to University of Gambia they are normally children of diplomats, business people etc who want an universal education for their child so when they return home they are accepted into the main stream. SAT is another internation system used by schools that have international families, popoular with embassy staff who are travelling. The difficult with taking the test for most students is COST who is paying, secondly trust, in thepast when you had a Gambian education it ws internationally recognised . but somewhere a long the line people had certificate and they had not studied for the exam. thirdly marking, students did take exams and the markers were taking bribes??? . There was a case of a man being charged for issuing student visa and certificates not sur ewhat happened.
That is why nowadys an African student who wants to take a first degree in the UK normally has to take an access course no matter what certificate they have in their own country. I do not know any university that will take the certificates at face value. I MAY BE WRONG, but the university in the UK that are recognised by British council are very wary of African school certificates.
I AM SURE other members of the Bantaba can advised what happens to a gambian student who wants to study in another country if that system will accept gambian school certificates. Sweden, france, belgium etc. hOPE THAT HELPS

jambo, thank you for the detailed response. WASSCE and SAT do not seem to be relevant to Gambian students at large. Do the students take the access course in the UK or in Gambia?
Yes, the standardized tests are indeed too expensive to take!
What do the Gambian students show as attestation of their excellence in education? Perhaps the reputation of the top schools?

they have to take the access course at a recognised education establishment. a lot wll travel to the UK and attend a college that is linked to the university of choice. so log as it is recognised by the british council they are okay.
In gambia to show their education standards and exam resutl each child gets a report at the endof the school year. But last visit it was the year Nine junion secondary school and Year 12 senior secondary reports that were the main two reports that were important. year 12 because that is the last year of formal education and to get into collee, university or training course you need this. It is regulated quite strictly by department of education. |
