79 ASPIRING IMMIGRANTS ARRESTED By Bubacarr k. Sowe
The police have indicated that about 79 people who were bound for the Canary Islands were apprehended over the weekend. According to the police spokesperson, Supretindent Aziz Bojang, 33 Gambians and four Senegalese were arrested at the beach in Brufut on suspicion of attempting to travel to Spain.
He said that about twenty five to thirty thousand dalasis was paid by the aspirant immigrants to the ring leader, out of which a canoe, two out board engines, 10 drums of fuel and all the logistical equipment and provisions were bought. Bojang also said that nearly a million dalasis was collected from the passengers and the boat was purchased at 275,000 dalasis from Kojo Nyanko. He said that Edrissa Jobe, the Captain, revealed that the route to Spain is much easier between June and August or September and it would take them about six or seven days to dock in Spain.
On that same day, the Gambia Navy intercepted another 17 people, 11 of them are Gambians, two Guineans (Conakry) and four Senegalese. On Saturday, 25 others were also apprehended around Radio Syd while waiting for a vessel to pick them.
