JOURNALISTS TRAINED ON CHILD PROTECTION
By Amie Sanneh & Annia Gaye

At least 25 journalists from both the print and electronic media on Thursday concluded a two day training workshop on violence against children.
The training was organized by the Child Protection Alliance. The main goal of the training is to enhance the participation of media practitioners in the promotion of the rights of the children and to develop mechanisms to monitor and implement the approved media code of conduct. Opening the training workshop, the President of The Gambia Press Union (GPU), Madi Ceesay, described journalists as human right activists. “We should draw attention to human right violence and encourage governments and others to make changes that improve the lives of people they govern,” he said.

Mr. Ceesay stressed the need for journalists to not only engage in exposing the plight of children (our violations of their rights) but to ensure reports do not aggravate the plight of children or put them in danger. He pointed out that the training is to address the issues, if balance reporting and non stereotyping of children in the media.

He urged journalists to make sure that they will always look into the best interest of children when reporting on cases dealing with children.
Speaking earlier, the programme officer of CPA, Nfamara Dabo, said the media has an important role to play in the protection of children from abuse and exploitation.
He said The Gambia has signed and ratified the UN Convention on the Right of the child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of Children. He spoke on the need to raise awareness on the aforesaid human right instruments. He stressed on the need for media practitioners to promote the rights of children.

Njundu Drammeh, the coordinator CPA, who gave the welcoming remarks, said it is the obligation of society to fight against abuse and exploitation.
