10 YEAR OLD GIRL STABBED TO DEATH By Amie Sanneh
Reports reaching Foroyaa have it that a ten year old girl (name withheld) was stabbed to death on August 15. The incident happened at 6am while the little girl was in bed. Sources revealed that the man (name withheld) who stabbed the young girl is a cousin brother to the girl and they lived in the same compound.
The source said the night before the incident, the culprit told the grandmother of the child to allow the child spend the night in his house. The source said the grandmother heeded to the request made by the culprit. It is reported that his sisters urged the girls grandmother to reject the request made by the culprit, because the latter is mentally ill and may harm the girl child, but the grandmother ignored their advice and told them that nothing will happen to her grand daughter. It is reported that the man stabbed the girl the following morning. Report has it that the mother of the child was not at home during the day of the incident, but she returned the following day after the tragic incident. The families of the victim were visited by this reporter who discovered that they were in a state of shock, and could not throw light on what transpired.

Is abuse of young girls within the family common place? Why would a grandmother feel it is ok to hand over a 10 year old child to a man? Would she feel obliged to? or would money be involved? The circumstances of the death of this little girl upset me a great deal. Adults should be protectors of children. In the West we are sadly very aware of peodophiles. On Bantaba it is often seen as a Western disease being brought into Gambia. But clearly, as is the case in the West as well, the most serious danger to children is NOT strangers, but people they know in their own communities, sometimes even their own fathers. It is nearly always MEN that do these terrible crimes. It is a mothers, aunts, grandmothers DUTY to PROTECT children from such things. It seems to be genetic in some men across cultures to behave in this way. It is very difficult to treat and impossible to cure. SUch men need prosecuting and removing from society. Life imprisonment seems the only answer to me. |

Sister, We pray for the girl. I am sure there is no money involved. The grandmother trusted the man. The only problem I see here is that the grandmother knowing of the state of the man, should not have allowed it. She underated the man. I would not have allowed it even if the man was the father. I would not jump into conclussion before knowing what realy happened. We are awear of peodophiles. As I remembered , such kind of people do not live a long live in Africa if caught. It is true that older men always look for yunger ones with poor economy, but they do not kill them. The worst thing is that making a child pregnant means that she has lost school as the school does not allow pregnant students to atten classes. Gambia should start giving such girls an adult education that can help them to continue their studies. I would not draw any conclussions yet. |

Alhassan you are right most times she will become pregnant, but this is a young child, something happened between him and the grandmother.
quote " It is reported that his sisters urged the girls grandmother to reject the request made by the culprit, because the latter is mentally ill and may harm the girl child, but the grandmother ignored their advice and told them that nothing will happen to her grand daughter." If they knew he was wrong, why did she not listen to the female members of the family. blood is on her hands.
