FIVE YEAR OLD GIRL RESCUED
By Amie Sanneh

Reports reaching this paper have it that on Friday 4th August 2006 a man was seriously beaten by a mob in Nemakunku, when he was caught trying to abduct a five year old teenage girl.

The incident occurred in Nemakunku during Friday prayers, when the five-year old girl was praying with her friends at the compound gate. According to our source, a man came and got hold of the young girl’s hand and took her away. The child started screaming and tried break free but to no avail. It was then that her friends went in the compound and raised the alarm. Then people started searching for the child without any idea where the child was.
When they reached the Nemakunku cemetery they heard the child screaming.
When the man who was holding the innocent child’s hand noticed that people were coming to the cemetery, he quickly ran away leaving the child behind.
People started chasing him as he ran into a compound not far from the cemetery.

However, the crowd followed him into the compound but a resident of the compound tried to prevent the crowd from entering the compound. The crowd forced their way into the house. A thorough search discovered the man in the ceiling.

He was brought down and mercilessly beaten. With the intervention of some elders, the crowd decided to hand him over to the Police, who came and whisked him off to the Wellingara Police Station. He was later taken to Faji Kunda Health Centre, where he received First Aid treatment before his statement was taken.

The Police PRO, Aziz Bojang, was contacted and he confirmed the story. He revealed that the culprit is a Gambian.
He said the five year old girl was among a group of children who were standing at their gate (opposite the Mosque) waiting for Jummah prayers, when the 41 year old man called the girl and told her to go with him to the shop in order to buy candy for her. Aziz Bojang said the girl followed the man and went with him for a long time without returning home. He added that on of the children then went to the compound and told the mother of the child what transpired.
The PRO said that was the time the mother of the child went to the cemetery and found the man standing near the child who was lying on the ground.
He said the mother then shouted for help and the man ran away leaving the child on the ground.

PRO Bojang pointed out that with the help of the people and officers the culprit was apprehended and arrested.
He remarked that they do not presently know what the man intended to do with the child.
PRO Bojang however advised the public to take of their children as criminals are everywhere.
He also urged the public to report cases to the nearest Police Station.

a lot of contradictions here, one "she was taken while she was saying prayers" or "when the 41 year old man called the girl and told her to go with him to the shop in order to buy candy for her. Aziz Bojang said the girl followed the man and went with him for a long time without returning home."

Either way he did get permission from the parents, and I am gald he was beaten, but was she 4 of 14.

I woul dnot like to be a member of his family the community will turn against them.

This is exactly what it was like in England years ago. You could walk about and feel totally safe and protected. Unfortunatley it is not like that anymore. I hope Gambia is not getting like it is here

Kassma, it is a different Gambia, how long is it since you visited Gambia,
It is not just the tourist areas that are changing. Local people such as farmers who donot get paid are feeling the pinch.
People who finish their schooling at grade 12 cannot get jobs, inflations is so high it is crippling the locals.

What a sadly -horror tell!
Most of guys used to say foreigners are plugging our candy Gambia.
But according to this information’s that the man was a very
Gambian, well man has to ask himself for where we are linking to.
Even if the information’s are little different of what first had said
Nevertheless its scaring .Isn’t there anymore a save heaven in this globe (inner this) since a saved country like ours been turned in to some how little suspicious country?
As we used to say when dogs start barking to you, you then better field his mouth on the spot. That by next time he will find his way out from you.

i don't know, when it comes to sexual molestation of young girls, i think it is fairly common in Gambia, women just won't talk about it when they get older because whatever you say, you're saying it against someone else's husband, son or brother. i know of 3 women in my family and still won't confront their molesters, its sad but when you have a society which is so heavily based on saving face, or not saying the wrong thing, or not appearing like this or that, its ridiculous
