We're considering an idea to recognize top scoring girls in GABECE by awarding a Geopack from us.

I'd like to learn more about the role of GABECE in Gambian education. Is it prestigious? Are the GABECE results used for admissions into the Upper Basic Schools? Are prizes given to the top scorers in GABECE? Are there inter-school competitions based on these results? Is there one total score for GABECE? Or is it a set of scores in different subjects, independently disclosed? Is English Vocabulary any part of it?

My internet searches have come up with precious little information.

I welcome your insights and observations.

GABECE, i believe is not used, to get into the upper secondary schools, is normally process of elimination.
Upper secondary school is nor compulsory, if you cannot afford officals do not chase the family.
1 Money, is a barrier to entry, some family will want their child to go to the next level but have no financial means.
2 Distance there might not be an upper secondary school in the locality
3 grades/ what have they achieved in their lower basic school.
4 references, who is backing you, family, sponsors, etc
5 english definately required and a high grade, maths, at least one science. english is dividend into written, oral. they are encourage to speak english to each other.
my example is the pupil i hope to help to get into methodist high, she will need to have a good agregate i think it is 6, good time keeping, good attendance, have been part of the school extra classes/hobbies.
I have not heard of the GABECE system at all in any of the schools.
Each upper basic school can be selective, and they are free to refuse a child if they think that they will not fit in. I listen to a teacher who explained why she refused a child that i wanted to sponser, he would not be a good pupil, he was only interested in football and video games. When they go to upper basic school the teachers will get rid of the time wasters.
Selection for school can depend on religion, muslims can choose to go to a Quaran school, christians can choose to go to christian school.
Most Upper Basic Schools are self supporting, perhaps a scholarship would be better for them. Have you thought of that.
Results for all exams are disclosed, I think Ndows is top of the league, with Marina, Zenith all private at the top, governement schools are st theresa's, st peters and I think talling methodist. If I am wrong, i hope members of the bantaba can correct me.
BUT PLEASE THINK ABOUT A SCHOLARSHIP.

Sister Omega, GABECE stands for Gambia Basic Education Cycle Examination. My understanding was that GABECE was required to get to Upper Basic Schools. I stand corrected by jambo.

jambo, a scholarship is a good idea. We'll consider it in the future.
