The president of the association of Gold and Silver Smiths, Mr Dawda Touray, has disclosed that his association is currently working out modalities to establish a full-fledge art institute where youths can be trained to become professional smiths.

In an interview with this paper, Mr Touray said the purpose of building the school is to promote arts and culture as, in his words, most of Gambian youths today shy away from practising smith.

He therefore called on parents to enroll their children in skill centres, describing smith work as a noble profession.


I think this would be a good initiative. In Germany, this profession has a very high reputation, but I heard that this is not the case in Gambia. I always wondered why.

definately this piece, it is good that it is getting attention. It is an honourable profession.
I wonder where they will source the gold. will it have international recognition
