Folks,
I ask to be excused for forwarding this piece here. Things in there that are worth sharing. The piece written by Pa Musa gives us a picture of the world.

Great piece, and contains a lot of stuff. I also see an eye on the piece. The new Phase of the world is a sad one. From all directions or almost in every country, there seems to be some strange relations. Terror from any one cannot be encouraged. Westerners see other struggle movements as terror groups, and inturn those groups see them even worst. To me, terror is simple. The moment that we seize someone's right to free expression, survival-terror is full to the brim. Dehumanization of the human species is totally wrong, no reason can be advanced to justify it truly. It is about that time that the law be respected, and diplomacy given a chance to bring peace in the whole world. There is no true winner in any physical fight, either way you would loose some combatants. As i look at happenings sometimes, i go out of thinking for some reasons, believing that there is a power out there called God/Il/Allah-with all His most beautiful names, who sees every movement we are told in the scriptures, and who can also make a stop to anything. I implore on that God to show mercy to humanity...ameen. The eye of your piece below is said well. I spend great times enjoying postings in all places. It is best to be a fan than the game player. The new Gambia, when born, as intellectuals are demonstrating in forums will enhance a peaceful Gambia.

Regards,
Yero

Dear all:

After a 4 month break from the Mighty Post, I want to present a short
discourse as described above and asks rhetorically whether the world is
jaywalking into another global conflagration.

To many people, Apolypse or Armageddon seems to be fast approaching and
humankind is like a deer stuck in front of the headlights of an
approaching truck.

In my discourse, I sadly cannot provide answers but I tried to connect
many disparate dots to try to paint a picture and I look forward to
queries, critique and questions on my article. I hope you all find this
discourse intellectually stimulating and challenging.

Thank you all for reading and Peace.

Pa Musa Jallow

PS Right now I am listening to typical and classing Bush-it and double
talk but he rightly states that in Lebanon we see US policy at work -
War on Infrastructure, Women and Children through a Proxy - how salient
and how true!!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Is the world jaywalking in a global conflagration or is this the
beginning of the end of Western hegemony and control of the world?

A discourse on current wars and crises and their roots in World Wars 1
and 2 and the abuse of religion and faith to manipulate humanity.

Disclaimer: This is a purely academic exercise and no dis-respect or
abuse intended to any religion or persons.

Introduction

Most observers and students of history and humans will note that 50 or
100 years is a twinkle and humanitys progress has always been two steps
forward and three steps back wards. The euphoria that marked the end of
the second world war that gave form to the aspirations and hopes of
progressive humanist forces in terms of international rule of law and
humanitarian law as well as the Geneva conventions.

For the first time in human history, crimes against humanity charges
were brought up even though arguably against the defeated axis by the
victors but instead of summarily justice, some form of due process was
instituted.

Secondly, the horrors and atrocities of World War 2 and lessons learnt
from World War 1 gave impetus to the formation of the United Nations
Organization to further and strengthen international peace; where
despite the undemocratic nature of the U N Security Council, the General
Assembly does operate on the basis of equality of all sovereign states
and nations.

But today after 50 years of cold war, and 61 years after the end of the
second world war, the world seems to be jaywalking into another global
conflagration. As one could find the seeds of World War 2 in World War 1
[i.e. the short sighted terms of the Versailles Treaty and the failure
of the powers to abide by the League of Nations provisions], so also can
be found the seeds of the seemingly impending global conflagration in
world wars 2 and 1.

The main causes are as follows-

1.????? The Palestine and Kashmir questions
2.????? The dismantling of the former Ottoman Empire and creation of the
Middle Eastern Client states
3.????? The rise of political Islam? first as an anti-colonial force,
then as a tool of neo-colonialists and final as a weapon against the
Soviet Union.

1.????? Palestine and Kashmir

A brief review of the history and evolution of Palestine and more aptly
the Holy Lands is a history of war and tribulation from the Old
Testaments records that seemingly allowed Jews to conquer and put to
sword its residents Canaanites, Philistines and others; to the aftermath
of coming of Christ, and the persecution of Jews including the expulsion
from Jerusalem by Rome and subsequent Christianization of Roman Empire;
the rise of Islam and capture of Jerusalem and Caliph Omars act of
faith and religious magnanimity in allowing the return of Jews to
Jerusalem and co-existence of the three Abrahamaic faiths under Islamic
rule. The final part of this saga started in the mid 1800s with the rise
of Zionism as a political movement by Europe based Jews with the active
support of government of Great Britain? the Super power of the time;
after the holocaust of Jews by Germany and many other European powers
between 1933 and 1945, the Palestine betrayal took place [European
Jewish refugees were assisted in taking over half of Palestine to set up
a Jewish homeland and state called Israel, today Palestinians are
fighting to be allowed to keep 20% of original Palestine as their
independent homeland]. From 1948 to this day, this development poses the
singular biggest threat and problem to global peace and a just and
peaceful resolution still remains a dream.

Kashmir also is another perfidious example of Western/British
machination and foreign policy. Today, largely forgotten is the role
Britain played in the division and sowing of the seeds of hate in Indian
subcontinent as well as the same in the Sudan [North and South divide as
well as Nigeria].

Upon advanced agitation for Independence, Britain actively sought and
encouraged the division of India and creation of a false so called
Islamic republic of Pakistan and that division resulted in millions of
deaths over the past 50 years and a looming threat of nuclear holocaust
and mutually assured destruction by India and Pakistan.

2.????? The Ottoman /former Islamic Empire and the Middle East

The Ottoman Empire was the last version of the Islamic Empire that had
its roots in the start and rise of Islam around 670 A.D. under Prophet
Muhammad and the spread of Islam starting from Medina, Mecca to the
gates of Vienna, across Spain to the frontiers of France. Half of
Southern Europe including the latter capital of the great Roman Empire
in Constantinople renamed Istanbul, the great price of Egypt had all
fallen to the Muslim armies and Islamic rulers in their many and varied
forms.

The Ottoman Empires siding with Kaiser Wilhelms Germany in WW1 and
their consequent loss led to the concerted dis-memberment of the
remnants of the Empire and a secular coup detat in Istanbul by Mustapha
Kemal who renamed the country and himself, Turkiye or Turkey and Kemal
Attaturk.

To finish off this great challenge to Western hegemony and in the minds
of many Western European leaders to reverse and finally erase the 1000
years history of Western and Christian losses to Islamic forces, the
Western leaders under the lead of Great Britain and France [the
superpowers of the day] instigated, supported and led Arab nationalism
and revolts against the much hated and discredited Turks with the
promise of Independence. From the Ottoman empire rose the Western client
states of Saudi Arabia [British] with Yemen, Kuwait, Qatar and the host
of satellite mini-states, Iraq and Palestine, Lebanon and Syria were
notably the French client states while the promised Kurdistan joined the
list of Western betrayals and perfidy. Promised independence and
freedom, these states were all re-colonized and many later gained
independence they joined the ranks of neo-colonial states and former
colonies to be controlled and exploited by their former colonial
masters.

3.????? The Rise of Political Islam and so called Islamic Fundamentalism

While a lot has been written about the Wests role in creating the very
monsters of Islamic fundamentalism or as some say Islamofascism,
Islamic fundamentalism can be traced to anti-colonial struggle and anti-
western hegemonic struggles in Egypt and other Muslim populated
countries.

First one has to understand the unique inter play between the rise of
Islam as a religion and as a power challenging and defeating Western
Christian powers for a 1000 years before the great reversal started.
There are two main schools of thought here: -

i.????? those who interpret the fast rise and domination of Muslim
forces as a sign of religious purity and superiority and therefore see
the decline of Muslim powers as a result of MORAL decay, hence call for
a return to the FUNDAMENTALS of Islam and this is the SALAFIST and now
confused with the WAHABI world view [Wahabi is actually a much narrower
worldview] and hence interpret the competition between the West and the
Islamic world as a RELIGIOUS CLASH
ii.???? those who interpret the competition between Christian and
Western world and the Islamic and non- Western world as purely
imperialistic and material oriented struggles for earthly power and
hegemony [that is purely non religious terms] or between Western
hegemonic and non-Western hegemonic forces.

While both schools of thought still underscore a competition and a
struggle for power and hegemony, the latter school of thought
understands and propagates that this is not religious war but about
resources and hegemony. As an African, I subscribe to the latter school
of thought as neither Christian Western Europe and its successor the US
led Imperial powers and hegemony DO NOT MEET the minimum standards to
qualify as CHRISTIAN or CHRIST LIKE in my humble view? there is no
where in the New testament or indeed the whole bible where Jesus Christ
propagated the use of force to enslave whole peoples or use of weapons
of mass destruction, the worst of which ever used was the atomic bombs
on Japan. Similarly the Arab and Islamic powers of Ottoman, Egypt or
even modern day Saudi Arabia and the like do not meet my definition of
Islam? the religion of the Prophet Muhammad and his Sunnah? they also
partook in the rape and pillage of Africa and massive enslavement of its
peoples? a struggle still ongoing in places like Sudan and Mauritania.

So while the rise of fundamentalist Islam can be directly traced to anti
colonial struggles by Muslim people but upon independence? the same
forces like the Muslim Brotherhood were immediately set upon by the
neo-colonial and pseudo socialist [pro-Soviet satellite] forces. It took
the fundamental and strategic error by the Soviet Union in its invasion
of Afghanistan [prodded and tricked into it by the Western intelligence
services? the CIA as admitted by U S National Security Adviser Zbigniew
Berzinski] for the West to start the mass propagation and propaganda of
Holy War jihad against atheist USSR, and the subsequent training,
arming and ideological brainwashing of hundreds of thousands if not
millions of Muslim youths.

Now, the? 1979 and 1980 US and Western Imperialist strategists can be
forgiven if they under-estimated the power of their own propaganda
supported by the client states petro dollars and muscles, with Saudi
Arabia, Egypt, North Africa and the poor peoples of South Asia forming
the bulk of canon fodder? highly dispensable assets in the War. These
poor youths became the Abu Hamzas, Abu Musab Al Zagawis, Abu Sayyafs,
and Osama bin Ladins of today.

The ideological pinning of their struggle was provided and refined in
the US/UK vetted Islamic universities of the Middle East satellite
states of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait under the guise of Wahabi thought; and
propagated in the madrassas and training camps in Pakistan and later
Afghanistan.

The funding and underwriting came from wealthy Middle East client states
again headed by Saudi Arabia and last the military aspects? arms and
tactics were provided by the US and UK special forces.

The mistake was that while brainwashing these kids cynically into
believing that they were MATYRS [Shahids] fighting Gods War? not
Western Strategic interests and then thinking that after the demise of
the USSR and Communism as a force in the struggle for political and
economic hegemony, these people will not on their extend the same
ideology to cover the struggle in Palestine and now the land of the two
Holy Sites Osamas definition of Saudi Arabia.

So here we are with a brewing war in Lebanon, a full fledge internecine
and international conflict in Iraq, war in Afghanistan, a war on terror
that challenges all accepted norms of civilized conduct in international
affair and the rolling? back of all the gains and lessons learned from
WW1 and WW2 in the international law and international humanitarian
laws- we stand now again at another precipice in human affairs, the war
on terror or Islamic fundamentalist forces one way or another linked to
the Saudi Wahabi-Salafist ideology and/or funding; incubated by the
Wests own propaganda of Jihad and Holy War and now re-interpreted and
re-adapted after the fall of the USSR continues unabated in all parts of
the world from China, Chechnya, the Balkans, the Middle East, South
Asia, Southeast Asia, North Africa,? in Somalia, Sudan and the very
Western capitals that gave so much aid and succour to it.

Today, US might and power has been checked and continues to be held in
check in Iraq and Afghanistan and much vaunted myth of Israeli
invincibility is also similarly brought crashing by several thousand
Hizbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad warriors.

So logically, one can surmise that another world war is not far fetched
and its seeds were sown in world wars 1 and 2 and ensuing cold war after
that. Today and on an increasing basis, almost daily, conflict amongst
peoples, nations, religions and co-religionists take place and
progressive humanist forces seem to hapless in the face of this
onslaught as the very self appointed champions of progressive humanism
have taken the bait and allowed themselves to be the very symbols of
failure to practise what they preach as much heralded by the
Guantanamos, Bagrams, Abu Ghraibs and other undisclosed prisons and
camps where suspects are held incommunicado and tortured or even killed
without any process of law.

Students of history ought not be surprised at these developments as the
self same self appointed champions of progressive humanism gave us the
Atlantic Slave Holocaust, the Jewish holocaust, the internment camps and
the concentration camps of Africa and the Americas as well as the
genocide of numerous peoples in the Americas and Australia.

The biggest fallacy will be the continued association of Western
Imperialistic hegemonic forces with the holy religion of Christianity or
Zionism with Judaism and Al Qaida or Wahabism or Islamo-fascism with the
holy religion of Islam.

From their humble beginnings, both Christianity and Islam became
hijacked and became institutions of state control and power. To students
of history, the arrogance and deadly exercise of power and might of
Western so called Christian nations is as un-Christian and unlike Christ
as the Saudi Wahabi state is un-Islamic and the tactics of Al Qaida
un-Quranic and unlike the Sunnah and example of Prophet Muhammad.

Conclusive remarks:

The role of Africa South of the Sahara has largely been left out even
though the struggle against neo-colonialism as well as the inter play
between religious based and inspired political divide and conflict is
also present, but Africa with the exceptions of the Northern part
[Algeria, Libya, Egypt] and formerly Apartheid South Africa where the so
called Dutch Reformed Church played a key role in justifying and under
pinning Apartheid until the late 1980s; religious based strife is
minimal but the advance of the Saudi Wahabi doctrine and sponsorship in
Sudan and Nigeria as well as the jihadi inspired insurgencies in
formerly Algeria cannot be overlooked.

However, Africa liberation struggle remains largely a struggle by
progressive humanist forces for economic independence and self
determination and the respect of the rights of all its people to live in
a free and just world against the agents of hegemonic forces bent on the
subjugation and exploitation of people and denial of their inherent
human and civil rights.

Food for thought:

The old African adage still rings true that as long as the tale of the
hunt is told by the hunter, the lion will never be glorified. From BBC,
CNN, Fox News, Al Jazeera to the Al Qaida inspired Web casts, they all
tell the tale of the hunt from the hunters perspective and the poor
lion will never receive his just glory!!!!
