Since my school days, I have often found it difficult to understand the concept of laws and courts not least when police dropped charges on my Dad for an event he was remotely involved. I always remember my uncle saying we have to avoid going to the courts because lawyers can turn white to black and the black to white. I could not understand why would someone want to do such a job, where the objective is not about telling the truth but paiting a convincing probable picture which is may or may not be true. Call me old fashion but think about about this way, the laws are made in parliament and put into status books in the most complicated English which require reading back and farward to protect the well being of the population. Majority of the population cannot read and write, do not have a clue what is in the law books and go about innocently commiting crimes, yet when in court they are told ignorance of the law is no excuse. No one attempts to explain the laws to ordinary folks, so for them they dont exist until they innocently commit a crime. As far as am concern to borrow the law term, it a conspiracy to induce others to commit crimes to keep lawyers in their jobs. I was brought up with the concept of truth equals facts and therefore have always watch lawyers with contempt. I know that in this breed of highly qualify and trained stories makers, there are those who are decent. Mahatma Gandhi was one of those decent lawyers lacking in todays breed. He defended the truth, he tells his client to tell him the whole truth, if his client is on the wrong, he would ask them to plea guilty. Its public knowledge that most lawyers today will try their atmost to prolong the cases, the longer the case the more money they earn, yet they would be the first to bellow eloquently ..... justice delayed justice denied. In the mist of all these suspicions, I always hoped that there are amongst them those that would stand and defend the vulnerable, the poor and the untoucheable. However a recent paper on the debate about Gambia lawyers and judges, I have come to the conclusion that all adult human beings are selfish and amongst these selfish and self-centeredness the lawyers rank first. Mr Justice Janneh said the salaries currently paid to Gambians in the Bench were too meagre to sustain them and their family and making Gambians shying away from the positions. He remarked, for more Gambian judges be attracted to the bench, he advocated among other things; facilities such as accommodation, health insurance for the judges and their family, electricity, water and telephone facilities, cars, medical and dental treatments, pension and retirement benefits, among others things be included in the already proposed Judges Acts and that the security of tenure of office be assured. Oh yes who on earth will not like such a job, you have no bill to worry about, job secured, basically like the king of Lesotho, at the expense of ordinary folks. So they want their salaries to be on the scaled of other commonwealth countries .... how special is this breed of human beings. So lets say they are paid all the salary they are requesting, money they would effectively not need anyway because everything is paid for them. I cannot put it in words my dissappointment, at a time that we need The Gambians most to take up these positions and kick away the like of Paul out of our justice system. For the main time, lets all enjoy the current pricarious situation ... the monkey dance.
