1.Imam Fatty renews call for commitment to religion -As Muslims observe Yowmal Ashura today
The Imam of State House has renewed his call for Muslims within The Gambia and elsewhere in the world to remain steadfast and show even more commitment to the teachings of the Islamic religion.
peaking in an interview with the Daily Observer Monday, Imam Abdoulie Fatty, also an executive member of The Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, also encouraged Muslims to fast the ninth and tenth days of the Muslim New Year (Muharram), commonly called ‘Yowmal Ashura’, saying fasting in those the days carry bountiful rewards from Allah.
His comments came as Muslims the world over, today, Tuesday observed the Yowmal Ashura, with a voluntary day of fasting which commemorates the day Noah left the Ark, and the day that Musa was saved from Pharaoh by God.
But in the words of Imam Abdoulie Fatty, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) had assured Muslims that if they fast even only the ninth day of the month, they are assured of Allah’s forgiveness of their sins for the whole of that year.
He indicated that Muslim scholars has had some contradictions about the day, but noted that during the time of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), he visited Medina and saw the Jews fasting on the tenth day of Muharram.
“He asked, “what was it?” and he was told that it was the day when Allah saved Prophet Musa from Pharaoh. When the Jews told this to the Prophet, he and his followers then fasted on the ninth day of the month so that it could be different from the way the Jews fast it,” he indicated.
He said the Prophet later promised to fast both the ninth and tenth days of the month, but noted that unfortunately, he could not fast the tenth day the following year because he passed away before that.
“It is acceptable and even more rewarding if a Muslim can fast for the ninth, tenth and eleventh days of Muharram. If a person intends to fast the days and suddenly fall sick and could not fast, he/she could prepare an Iftarr (fast breaking meal) for someone who fast and they will equally receive the benefits,” he added.
While using the opportunity to congratulate the Muslim community for witnessing another new Islamic year, Imam Fatty equally encouraged Muslims to remain united and follow the Islamic teachings as brought to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by Allah.
