RELIGIOUS SECT MEMBERS DETAINED

Information gathered from Jimbala village, Lower Saloum District in the Northern part of the Central River Region of the Gambia reports that (10) people were arrested by the Police in Kaur on the 22nd and 25th of October 2013 respectively for allegedly observing the ‘Tobaski’ feast on a different date from Banjul. According to sources, the 8 people who were arrested are part of the ‘Ndigal Sect’ who decided to observe the ‘Tobaski’ feast on the 21st of October 2013 as indicated in their religious feast calendar. Sources indicate that the following people put under arrest were Alhagi Batch Ceesay, Ali Fanta Ceesay, Batch Jaw, Mam Ngangie Ceesay, Ngangie Sai Ceesay, Sulayman Ceesay, Alhagi Mamud Ceesay, Kabou Ceesay, Omar Ceesay and Matarr Secka.
Talking to Omar Ceesay on Tuesday 29th of October 2013 on the issue, he indicated that 8 people namely; Alhagi Batch Ceesay, Ali Fanta Ceesay, Batch Jaw, Mam Ngangie Ceesay, Ngangie Sai Ceesay, Sulayman Ceesay and Alhagi Mamud Ceesay were arrested on Monday 22nd of October 2013 by the Kaur Police and later transferred to Janjanbureh.
According to Ceesay, on Friday 25th of October 2013, he (Omar Ceesay), Kabu Ceesay and Matarr Secka were arrested by the same Police and taken to Janjanbureh. However he said he (Omar Ceesay) and Matarr Secka were released on Monday 28th of October 2013 and that they are reporting on bail at the Kaur Police Station while the rest are still being detained in Janjanbureh.
Asked what reason was given to them for their arrest, Omar said they were informed that they were not supposed to celebrate the Muslim feast of Idul Adha on a different date set by government.
The Police PRO when contacted said he was not aware but promised to find out. Foroyaa will publish the comment of the Police PRO as soon as we get it.

Information gathered from Jimbala village,Lower Saloum District in the Northern part of the Central River Region of the Gambia has it that eight out of ten Religious Sect Members who were arrested and detained at Janjanbureh Prison for observing the ‘Tobaski’ feast on a different date with Banjul has been released on Friday, 1st of November 2013, after spending ten days in detention. According to sources, the 8 who were released are part of the ‘Ndigal Sect’ and they are Alhagi Batch Ceesay, Ali Fanta Ceesay, Batch Jaw, Mam Ngangie Ceesay, Ngangie Sai Ceesay, Sulayman Ceesay and Alhagi Mamud Ceesay.
The other two namely; Omar Ceesay and Matarr Secka were released on Monday 28th of October 2013. Sources went further to indicate that though the released detainees are not charged, they are still asked to be reporting on bail at the Kaur Police Station.
