GAMBIAN COUPLE JAILED FOR 12 YEARS IN SPAIN
"According to news a report, a Barcelona Court has sentenced to twelve years in prison a Gambian couple resident in Vilanova i la Gertru for having allowed the removal of the clitiros of their two underage daughters. The report in the MSN website indicate that the judgment accuses Binta and Sekou, living in Spain for more than 20 years, of two counts of female genital mutilation.
One of the daughters is 6 and the other 11 years old. The court held that the respect for the traditions and cultures is limited by the respect for human rights that act as enforceable minimum common denominator in all the cultures, traditions and religions. The court further held that respect for the customs and traditions of other cultures “has a limit where it produces aberrant and unacceptable behaviours in our cultural environment.” The parents have denied in court to be responsible for mutilating the girls and said that the girls may have been mutilated in 2007 by their relatives during holidays in Gambia. The father told the court that he is against the practice. The court believes that the couple removed 'directly or through a person of unknown identity' the clitoris of their daughters, between 5 July 2010 to January 20,2011.
The court maintained that in a review in the first of the dates, doctors did not detect any anomaly in the genitals of the girls, but other specialists in the second of the visits, six months later, detected that the clitoris had been removed. The judge concluded that the ablation was done in Spain since during that period the girls were in Spain."
