U-19 TEAM RETURN TO HEROES WELCOME
"Players and officials of the Gambia U-19 team returned home Tuesday after winning the eight-team invitational football tournament organised by the Italian region of Umbria. The Gambia beat China 1-0 in the final played on Sunday.
Addressing the gathering at the headquarters of the Gambia Football Federation (GFF), the minister of Youth and Sports, Alieu Kebba Jammeh, hailed the players for winning the trophy despite the difficult conditions. 1. THE POINT SPORTS NEWS; 2. GAMBIAN PLAYER, KITS MANAGER ABSCOND IN ITALY
"A Gambian U-19 player and his team kits manager Sanna Bojang, have absconded in Italy after leaving the team camp unannounced, Foroyaa Sport has learnt. Malick Damel, the U-19 player from second tier side Wallidan and the Kits manager reportedly decamped to the streets in Italy – the first time such a thing occured since Gambia began participating in the Umbria tournament last year.
Frantic efforts to trace the duos whereabouts by the head of delegation and entourage proved futile. The Normalisation Committee are dismayed by the abscondence labeling the act as unsportsmanlike and ‘regrettable‘. The twenty-one out of the twenty-three man delegation returned home on Tuesday after the team’s exploit in the European country and a saddened NC said of the issue in a dispatch,
‘The Normalisation Committee however regrets to announce that the entire team and delegation has arrived except two members who decided to abscond. Kits Manager Sanna Bojang and player Malick Dambel are reported to have decamped from the trip and no trace of them has been successful. The Normalisation Committee stresses that the move is regrettable and it is in no way a sporting behaviour especially at this crucial time of Gambian football. Both Sanna and Malick have been key members of the delegation and played pivotal roles during the trip and their staying away therefore is regrettable.’
It is unclear the number of times the Wallidan player had featured for the Gambia U-19 during the course of the 8-team youth championship. Unbeaten Gambia breezed past debutants China, courtesy of Momodou Badjie’s decisive lone goal to clinch the tournament title after a heart-piercing early exit last year.
The tournament is set-up as a player scouting ground for agents in top clubs with Ali Sowe the latest beneficiary having been drafted by Italy Seria A’s Chievo Verona upon an impressive outing in the tournament last year. Gambia’s participation is facilitated after a pact signed between the Gambia and Italian government –a mutual agreement of which is reason for Mancini’s stay as senior Scorpion’s head coach."
