HOW TO SAFEGUARD THE PUBLIC FROM FAKE DRUGS
Foroyaa Editorial: Published on Tuesday, 29 January 2013

People are falling and dying like never before. There is need for a review of the life expectancy in the country as well as the major causes of death. There is also need to look at the quality of drugs that people take and the source of treatment.

In the past, people who fell ill would first go to the hospital and turn to herbalists only when they have exhausted hospital treatment without being cured. Now many people are turning to herbalists and turn to the regular hospitals only when their illnesses have worsened. There is need for intense health talks to enable people to turn to the hospitals as the port of first call when one is ill.

Secondly, it is very common to find tablets being sold without any labels. There is need for patients to know that they are buying the drugs that are prescribed. There is the possibility of giving people fake drugs if the drugs are not properly labelled and with their trademarks.

The cost of drugs is also becoming prohibitive for poor people to get treatment. There is need to do a study on the most common of illnesses and the cost of curing them. We hope some people are not dying because they cannot afford medication for hypertension and other illnesses.

Social medicine requires the identification of common illnesses and a determination to provide free or cheap drugs to cure them.

Very true, but labeling and trade marks on all forms of printed packaging can be copied these days with sophisticated printing and photography equipment, there is a great deal of money to be made from things medical and plenty of greedy people around to make money by selling rubbish instead of the genuine article.
