Dear Members,
I want you to please take a moment and read this positing. A good reality check for me came when my trainer/motivator Kristin gently sat next to me in my office, and told me to got to Calorieking.com and enter my weight to calculate my BMI -- I said "BM what???? She gently answered: Body Mass Index calculator -- the tool that nutritionists and doctors want you to know to help you with weight loss and help maintain better health. When I did it, I cried right in front of her because although I was happy with my body and did not care what others thought, reality hit me -- I was under the "Obese" category. This was my KEY REASON for counting calories, eating less, and exercising. I kept on going to calculate my BMI until my numbers moved away from the "Obese" category and I now fall between "Health & Overweight" because for me to be "Healthy" based on my height, my weight has to be 175lbs and this Gambian cannot do that!!!!! I URGE you to go weigh yourself, know your height and do your BMI to see where you are, and if you are in a category that is not healthy, this will inspire you to make a change. I shared my story because this is what woke me up, and I hope it does you too. Kristen (my friend who is a Nutritionist) told me that when she worked at the hospital, they used to get most of their information from this website. I used to eat Sam's Club muffins and wondered why I was exercising every day but not losing weight. Well, I learned from this website that each muffin has 680 calories -- more than half of my daily allowance for calories!!!! When I stopped eating them, I lost so much weight my sister Sailey Sey and Maimuna Sey cautioned me to stop Here is the link: http://www.calorieking.com/interactive-tools/body-mass-index-bmi-calculator/ CalorieKing - Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculator www.calorieking.com Find out what your Body Mass Index (BMI) is and whether it's associated with an increased health risk of developing conditions such as coronary disease, certains forms of cancer, stroke, high blood pressure and non insulin-

Welcome Awa. I look forward to reading your contributions in this Health and Nutrition Forum. Being Obese is usually seen as sign of being wealthy and happy by many Gambians.
No doubt we have a growing number of cases of hypertension and diabetes. |

Modou, The irony is that our generation is seeing the light and actually making healthier food choices. Now, convincing the folks back home is the challenge and a source of major concern. I am in hopes that someone on the ground will help educate his/her family and spread a new trend of healthy living.
Have a good day! |
Regards,
Awa |
