allafrica.com july 11
"The Secretary of State for Agriculture who is also National Mobilizer of the ruling APRC party has said that though they were doing all they could to make sure that farmers get paid for groundnuts bought with promissory notes, he could not tell when exactly these payments will be effected. Though he admitted saying earlier this year that farmers would get their monies before the end of last April, he denied saying that the payments would be made after the African Union Summit that ended Sunday July 2nd. Mr. Touray blamed "the private sector for failing the farmers.". What a mess

You would think that this would happen, great public relations gesture, in time for the elections, etc etc.
I do not think it will happen, by the time things like this get to the press, he knows what has happened.

If there is no money for nuts for the government to buy them from the farmers. Then why can't the buyers deal directly with the producers and cut out some of the unecessary middlemen? Or alternatively if the market is saturated why can't Gambian Farmers diversify if groundnuts are no longer profitable? Can someone please enlighten me further on this issue?

Mbay,
I would prefer if you give a def ear to the ones who try to pick on your language. They cannot debate on issues, so in the end they pick on your language. You carry on your debate and forget them.

This has never happened during the Jawara regime. Farmers being owed money for months happening during Jawara regime? Of course promisery notes were issued during Jawara's time but payment usually followed after only a couple of weeks, not months.
