When I first visited our beloved Gambia in 1992, crossing from Banjul to Barra was a spectacular event. As the ferry crossed over to the North Bank we could see Dolphins jumping over the waves with their glistening shiny skin, synchronised dancing swimming across the estuary guiding the captains crossing. Now where have all the Dolphin gone? Who used to guide the fishermen out at sea, and rescue swimmers Have the Japanese fishermen dragged them out of the sea and scooped them up as exotic delicacies. Where have all the dolphins gone? These angelic Gambian resources seem to have disappeared without anyone seeming to care or even being aware! By S.Ba Copyright 2006

i also used to see them when i was younger crossing. Madiba, Lemontime is not right, the ferry crossing from Banjul to Barra is on the River Gambia(the estuary) not the Atlantic.Barra is not the furthest point on the North Bank. there is no ferry that crosses the Atlantic ocean!!! i also saw them when we went for a school trip to James Island.
i didnt see any the last time i crossed in 2004. apparently River Dolphins are an endangered species.maybe they gone? |

Njucks,
Though my reply was meant to pull Lemon's leg; i would still like some clarification from you. I have been crossing Banjul-Barra for sometime. I last crossed in 2004. I think i also last saw Dolphins around 2001. However , i have observed that while in the ferry half the journey i realised there is a meeting point of River Gambia and The Atlantic ocean. Their waters are so distinct and they don't overlap. Its my believe that the Dolphin because of its size its natural habitat could be a large water bodies such as oceans. |

Madiba there are two main species of dolphins river and ocean ones. River ones are also found at estuaries like the ones in Gambia or used to be in Gambia. It is a shame if these angelic creatures have become extinct to be assigned to legend like the Gambian Dragon.

Thanks Sis for the clarification. The Gambian waters am told are very rich yet the least protected. But why? Sis did dragons really exist? I heard alot of stories but i thought it was just mythical.
Please more info on dragons. |

thanks Madiba
i didn't get that b/w you and Lemontime . but you're right that where the two waters meet.
SO thanks for an excellent article, maybe Kondonrong has seen a NINKI NANKA. i have heard people swear that it exists .
but there are many animals that were until recently (1913) in The Gambia, like the elephant. its hard to imagine that they were roaming about in this small country. it was also common to hear/see wild hyenas. |

It's amazing the amount of biodiversity that as been wiped out since Africans lost control of their own resources.
