Gambian internet newspapers and websites don't mince their words in condemning president Yahya Jammeh and his idiosyncratic interpretation of the law - just as his equally unorthodox interpretation of medical science - at the expense of people's lives.
By the same token Jammeh's sidekicks are lambasted for their support and/or execution of the outlandish doctrines. Surprisingly the indignation never extends to the president's impressive entourage of Sene-Gambian musicians, recipients of truck loads of Live Achievement and other Micky Mouse awards as well as millions of Dalasis in return for their tireless image building job for their Number 1 Patron.
One of the most illustrious hence best rewarded artists being Thione Seck - as such a worthy successor to Senegal's incumbent minister of Culture - who, joined by wife and children, doesn't miss any opportunity to extol the virtues of his Gambian maecenas. This has earned Thione Seck cars, plots of lands, houses, preferential presidential cure for his wife's asthma, and huge amounts of money.
Maintaining an international music career requires high profile publicity targeted at the fan base. Maintaining an internet newspaper requires cash funding, increasingly from ads targeted at their own audience.
That's why freedom loving Gambians, by advertising his tours, endorse the mbalax maestro in his unwavering devotion and his big abarka to their magnanimous president. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sedqMGE93y8&feature=plcp.
Meanwhile Senegalese journalists prove to be less afraid of the truth: http://www.seneweb.com/news/People/execution-de-senegalais-en-gambie-les-amis-de-yahya-assane-ndiaye-thione-seck-ouza-coumba-gawlo-hellip-se-terrent_n_75984.html

The world is divided into people who do things, and people who get the credit. Try to belong to the first class - there's far less competition (D. Morrow) |
