A rough Google direct translation of a Danish article from DR .
Infant mortality in Africa has been halved
25th June 2012 In Senegal, Kenya and Rwanda's infant mortality rate in recent years has fallen by over eight percent annually. At this rate, infant mortality halved again in less than 10 years. Developments occurring in developing countries worldwide, but recently, it dramatic decline in infant mortality really taking off across Africa, writes told the paper. In most countries, falling infant mortality today twice as fast as in the 1990s and early 00'er, according to a new report from the Initiative Countdown to 2015 - a collaboration between international experts, UNICEF, WHO, United Nations Population Fund UNFPA, Save the Children more.
Astonishing news Development in Africa is going faster than in China during the prosperous early 1980s. - It is amazing news for anyone who still believe that Africa is mired in the bottomless poverty and death. That Africa is rapidly disappearing, said Michael Clemens at Center of Global Development for The Economist. There can't be a single reason why fewer children are dying. The decline occurs in all parts of the continent, in small and large countries, both in countries with high economic growth and more modest growth rates.
Aid is not critical Neither the extent of development aid seems to be decisive. It is rather a judicious mix of better policies, better governance, stable economic growth and new technology. And then a number of specific health measures, particularly the increased use of impregnated bed nets against malaria...

That would be very interesting to find out Gambia's current infant mortality rates. I found many references to African countries, but none for Gambia, bed nets have been found to be very important, that is not to say that the other factors found are also important as the quote I have posted from the article highlights. http://countdown2015mnch.org/country-profiles/gambia http://www.cgdev.org/content/article/detail/1426201/
