One Momodou Suwa, an ex-official of the Office of the President was last Friday, 13th April 2012 arraigned before the Special Criminal Court in Banjul, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Nkea, charged with economic crime charge.

It was alleged that the accused, charged with economic crime under Specified Offences Act, contrary to Section 5(a) of the Criminal Code Cap 13:07 Volume III, Laws of The Gambia, 2009, sometime in the year 2005 to 2006 whilst employed at the Office of the President, Republic of The Gambia, willfully obtained a sum of D793, 960 from the government of the Republic of The Gambia for the purpose of obtaining a Masters Degree in the United Kingdom and with the promise of returning back to the civil service and on time, a condition he failed to fulfill and thereby caused economic loss to the government of The Gambia.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and an application for bail was moved, and the applicant was granted bail in the sum of D2 million with two Gambian sureties in the like sum with landed properties in the Greater Banjul Area.

Meanwhile, the matter was adjourned to the 25th April 2012 for the prosecution to open its case.

If you give a promise and then ignore it then you are unreliable and consequently untrustworthy.
