"The opposition has been in the lime light these days. These past days the opposition has been inviting the media for press briefings. They informed the Press that they have engaged the IEC to work towards leveling the political landscape for Multi party contest. The IEC has responded with promises of improvement. The opposition responded by calling on the IEC to postpone the elections. The IEC has decided that it would not postpone the elections. Now it is left to the opposition to decide how far they would go with their declaration for the political landscape to be leveled. A meeting was held by seven opposition parties on Wednesday 7th March 2012 to discuss on a common position. The media practitioners were informed that further consultation was needed with executive committee members to decide on a final position today.
Nomination starts tomorrow. Foroyaa will be watching which political parties would put up candidates. The fact remains that the opposition has started a process which should be continued by all viable political parties. It has articulated its demands and has initiated a dialogue with election authorities that would give rise to a genuine electoral system if consistently pursued. We will see what the ruling party would do to prevent the country from being a one party state.
Where there is no viable opposition there is no viable multiparty system. Such a country would undoubtedly descend towards oligarchy or autocracy." |
