‘Imposition of candidates on electorate unacceptable’

The Office of the President has issued a statement describing as ‘unacceptable’ and ‘contrary to the principles and ideals of the APRC party’ any APRC Constituency Committee imposing the candidature of any incumbent National Assembly member on the people.
A media release from the Officeof the President yesterday signed byDr.Njogu Bah, secretary general and head of the Civil Service, revealed that the practice of imposing incumbent candidates on their constituents for selection as an APRC candidate, or choosing a candidate that does not reflect the true choice of the people is unacceptable and should cease immediately.
The release reads:
Reports are reaching the Office of the President that some APRC Constituency Committee are imposing the incumbents on their constituents for selection as an APRC candidate, or choosing a candidate that does not reflect the true choice of the people for the forthcoming Parliamentary elections, which is contrary to the principles and ideals of the APRC.
Therefore, Executive Directives are given that the practice of imposing any candidate on constituents for selection as an APRC candidate is unacceptable and should cease immediately.
Furthermore, the APRC party officials are hereby informed that any constituency that has not yet identified a candidate should submit the names of two (2) to three (3) potential candidates to the party chairman and leader, His Excellency, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh, who will choose one (1) out of the submitted names.
