UPDATE from The D.O.
Snippet. "We also wish to remind the people about the farming season that has just begun. The fact that we are in need of food aid is itself an indication that we need to work extra hard this farming season so that we accomplish the vision of the leadership in making the country food self-reliant. Still a very serious situation, as more aid comes in:
"We are also giving financial support to a number of organisations working within The Gambia and the wider region. We will continue to monitor the situation in The Gambia and across the region. The United Nations has estimated that over 35% of The Gambia’s population are at risk of food insecurity with grain output 50% below average."

Still serious obviously but it seems that all agencies and the government are working in a satisfactory manner together,Gambian news quite often fails to reveal the full extent of the famine, for that's what it is.

"The beneficiaries, Jarra East district in the Lower River Region and the community of Lower Baddibou in the North Bank Region will under the emergency phase receive food aid for four months (12 kilo of rice per person per month for 4 months), and seeds and cash vouchers (cost of 50kg of fertilizer per farmer for 5778 farmers), and hygiene promotion and malnutrition screening and cooking demonstrations." |

The farming community of Kuntaur Fullakunda is currently harvesting rice. Both the Taiwanese and The Gambia Red Cross has been buying the newly harvested paddy rice at D25 per kg. and distributing it as seeds to areas that had crop failure. This is good news for the community because there is a lot of money circulating there right now. This village harvests rice 3 times a year. These are some of the perspectives missing in the story in my opinion. The journalists could have made a research and added that piece of information. |

"The journalists could have made a research and added that piece of information. ",True but they have their own problems,so money is circulating, that can only be good for everyone. Its good that food is getting to those who are hungry.

Some communities unaware that aid is available: http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/need-for-equal-food-aid-distribution
Snippet; "While some areas have benefitted, many communities, for instance in Kantora, Niamina West, Basse and Wuli, do not even know that there has been food aid and fertilizer assistance given to farmers in the country. So the question that comes to mind is whether the assessment of areas deserving such assistance was properly done , and whether such assessment was credible." |

Money given to the food aid programme,I hope it is used wisely to help the hungry:
“Therefore, I will not wait until I gather millions and start giving out but I will share the little I have with me right now,” he stated.
Very good,I wish those who have millions (Ds,£s.$s.!) would think the same way instead of concentrating on how much more THEY can get.

“Right now, I have no money to buy provisions for breaking my fast. I borrow money from shopkeepers to buy provisions and expect to pay them after harvesting…” said Koyo. “The price of fertilizer that I saw was between D700 and D800. I do not know where it came from. I also saw some fertilizers in the village and I thought it was for all of us, but I was told that it was for the rice growers. The government should supply us with fertilizer. Most farmers cannot buy fertilizer at such an amount when we are struggling to put food on the table.” Koyo’s views are shared by many farmers this reporter interviewed, including Chekerr Bahaga of Gunjur Kuta, a village in the Wuli West district.

This donation from UK tax payers shows that the food problem has not gone away and should not be forgotten, maybe those bantaba readers who have friends in Gambia especially in rural areas who have little or nothing may consider that it's time now to send some money, by Bayba,Moneygram,or others in the money transfer market, banks tend to be stupidly expensive to do this job and if you havn't got a bank account cannot "help(?)"

"When quizzed to give details why The Gambia was not noticeable when it comes to the Sahel, both Victorian and Phall said countries in the Sahel region responded to the crop failure way back in January, while The Gambia only came up in March 2012. “It was also imminent that The Gambia was not giving out information on time when the crop failure occurred pertaining to other countries who have given their report on time. The fact of the matter is that those countries in the Sahel who alerted and shared information got the attention of the donors, and the reason for The Gambia being left behind was that it failed to report the case on time,” they noted.

Probably these figures that the above are referring to,if they are then the newspaper article was published online on "Wednesday, February 29, 2012 " and as the figures were obviously collated by the Gambian administration a lot earlier there appears to be an error somewhere, most likely in the Gambian administration failing to forward the information,on time.
