Rice and other foodstuff which have been kept in a Kanifing Municipal Council for more than two years without being distributed to the needy continues to rot and pose a threat to the health of residents living in the environ.

After revisiting the place again on 21 September, 2012 and found the same situation this reporter consulted the authorities at the Kanifing Municipal Council to find out whathas been done so far the clear the store and get rid of the health risk.

When the Kanifing Municipal Council CEO was approached at his office to offer explanation regarding the spoilt rice, Mr. Tapha Njie, explained that: "Yes, the rice is there and is not fit for consumption any more but I cannot explain anything as to how it has happened."

According to CEO Njie, it was the current Director of Finance at Banjul City Council (BCC) one Mr. Nyang who was then in charge of it at the KMC.

He explained further that the rice has been there for so long and is not fit for use anymore and as such they are working to remove it from the store.

The KMC CEO pointed out that they should remove the rotten rice from the store because it is polluting the environment. He also added that he was appointed to the position recently but since the matter was reported to him he said, they are just waiting for the former CEO who is now at BCC to come back from overseas. Mr. Nyang said as soon as he returns, they would empty the store and he promised to inform the press when they carry out exercise.

COMMUNITY CENTRE DELAPIDATING WHILE KMC FAILS TO REMOVE ROTTEN FOOD ITEMS THE PRESIDENT SHOULD SEND A TEAM TO INVESTIGATE

Foroyaa Editorial: Published on Thursday, 04 October 2012

Foroyaa has been monitoring the state of the Rice and other foodstuff which have been kept in a Community Centre at Kanifing for more than two years without being distributed to the needy.

The food items are now rotten and pose a threat to the health of residents in the environ who have turned to the Press after exhausting all attempts to get official attention.

Some months ago the Public Relation Officer of the Municipality promised immediate action to dump the waste and rehabilitate the building for public use.

In September, we were promised that the waste will be removed and that press will be informed accordingly. We are now in October and nothing has come by way of the Press to indicate readiness to remove the health hazard. We are therefore calling on the office of the President to intervene to rescue the residents from such a serious health hazard. Rodents are very dangerous and could transfer to neighbouring compounds before the waste is finally removed. A strategy is necessary to ensure that the pests die along with the removal of waste.
