Google to launch controversial privacy rules

Several objections lodged in Europe over legality of company's new policy, due to be rolled out on March 1.

29 Feb 2012 11:02

Internet firm Google is set to launch its controversial new privacy policy on March 1, allowing the company to regroup data from several of its services that were previously separate.

However, the company's decision has come under strong criticism from users and a number of countries, including South Korea and France.

On Tuesday, France demanded that the internet giant postpone rolling out the policy due to come into effect on Thursday, as it appeared to break European Union data protection rules.

In January, the European Commission launched a bid to make companies, including internet giants such as Google or Facebook, give people more control over their personal data or face big fines.

Avoid being persecuted by Google
28th February 2012

From first March Google will be combining private information with your queries on the websites.

Concretely this means that you now will have access to a narrower part of the Internet than you currently do, and that you will find it harder to get an objective overview using Google.

It can, among other things mean that you in the future will only be presented with hits that fit with your worldview and spared the hits that challenges it.

The Danish Consumer Council's advisory magazine Think writes.

For example if Google detects that you are Christian and leftist, you can now get rid of links on Buddhism and lower taxes - unless you are specifically looking for it.

Up to yourself
But it can be addressed.

- It is up to the individual consumer to decide whether you want to wipe the slate clean at Google, says Anette Høyrup who is a lawyer in the Consumer Council to Tnink.

According to Think it's about to deleting your Google search history - the same is true with a YouTube account.

Delete Google History
You can delete and stop the search history from your Google account using four simple steps:

1. Go to google.com / history

2. Log into your Google account

3. Press "Remove the entire Web History"

4. Press "OK"

When you delete your search history, it will stop automatically being saved in the future.

Delete YouTube history
On YouTube you can clear your history in the following way:

1. Login to your YouTube account

2. Go to youtube.com / my_history

3. Press "Clear entire display list"

4. Press "Pause viewing history"

Think however, stresses that none of these measures will prevent Google from collecting information about you and use them internally or disclose it to authorities in specific cases.
