A young dimba fruit when cooked with chere is called GHENG. The ripe dimba fruit is called MOUTA. The tree itself is called Dimba. In mandinka it is called DUTA LUBO. |

I did that a lot of the times. Dimba is harvested just when the rains start. They will soon be ready for harvesting the young fruits. You cook it with peanut powder and steam it. It’s as soft as a boiled egg. Sometimes that is all that is there to eat. Millet or coos would long gone.
You know, the month of September is called SEKEH TEMBER. SEKEH in Mandinka means pervert. That is how most villagers associate the month with. The previous year's harvest is gone and the only one due, which is the corn, will be ready until around November. This is the time when many children die and suffer severe malnutrition and unfortunately, it is also at this tie that malaria is prevalent.

September is the toughest month in the villages. It is the best time to help and it is appreciated more when everything farm produce is gone. |

People rush to the corn field and try to harvest some few one that mature early. There used to be a village wide sanction in which no one was allowed to harvest their own farm until the Alkalo said so. Young boys would hide and roast corn in the bush beacuse if you are caught you will be punished in front of everybody. in Mandinka it is called TONG.
Some go the millet farm and sometimes cut some of the half ready produce and dry them in the sun so that the seeds would come off easily. Sometmes it is smoked dry. October was much better because you had few options. |
