As we wait patiently for the outcome of the coalition talks, it is very clear that a whole lot is riding on it, and in fact the future of our country is at stake. For most of us who have been part of the coalition effort, we are cautiously optimistic knowing the difficulty of finding common ground among the party leaders. Like most Gambians in the Diaspora, we are keeping our fingers crossed hoping upon hope that all the parties are well aware of the need for a deal in order to save our country. Even the cyber warriors have signed a period of détente to allow the talks to find a resolution which can lead to a coalition of all parties. As we wait, it is very clear to all the stakeholders that time is indeed against us and there is a need to wrap it up if we are going to give ourselves time to launch a winnable campaign against Jammeh.

Sitting, hoping and waiting for resolution is a road that STGDP has travelled before, and that has really, affected the anxieties of members and followers of Gambian politics. Those anxieties are beginning to come through, and after series of direct talks with all of the opposition parties, the parties again are unable to come up with a coalition. All the opposition parties have indicated that the only way they can be competitive against Jammeh is through a coalition.
However, just like 2006, they are still haunted by their inability to make bold concession which could bring about coalition. Now is not really the time trying to explain or justify the need of a coalition in order to give us a chance to take our country back, but to come up with a political deal that will bring all parties under one tent. The Diaspora is really seen as the bastion of opposition support, and irrespective of our partisan leanings, we are only interested in a deal that will bring about a united opposition against Jammeh come 2011. As an independent observer puts it: “not having united front against Jammeh in 2011 will without a doubt be the final nail in the coffin of bringing about change in the Gambia through peaceful political means, and opposition politics in the Gambia will be dead for a long time to come”. It will not be inconceivable for the Gambia to be stuck with the Jammeh government for the next two decades

Talking about finding a deal; STGDP would like to surface critical issues we highlighted as very important if we are to find the compromise that can give us the deal for a united front. In the proposal we sent the leaders back in 2009, we highlighted some of the critical issues we deemed to be areas that need to be confronted head on if we are to come up with the compromise for a coalition: first, the selection of the leader of the united front to come from the largest opposition party, secondly, both the campaign phase and the governance phase after the opposition defeats Jammeh should be reflective of all parties, thirdly, the leader of the united front will be term limited during the transitional period and will not seek or support any candidate in 2016, and finally the transitional period will be the period focused on the restoration of democracy in the Gambia.

STGDP has learned some of the details of the UDP plan for a united front, acquainted ourselves with the NADD MOU that brought all the parties together signed back in 2006, and have also read and seen the PDOIS agenda 2011. These are all commendable coalition documents and without a doubt address the challenges we are faced with in our country and how to come together, but now is the time to make the bold concession and compromise on a plan that will bring all the parties under a big tent. STGDP is urging all the parties to support the UDP initiative on the table at this juncture because it contains all aspects of the policies highlighted in all the documents. It will give us a leader that has garnered largest votes ever gotten by an opposition leader. It will also give us a transitional leader that will be term limited after the transitional period, which directly addresses the safeguards and self-perpetuating rule in the NADD MOU, and in-depth relevant policies issues highlighted in PDOIS agenda 2011. Please let us all come together and contest the 2011 election under a united front, and together we will give all Gambians the opportunity to vote and defeat president Jammeh. Finally, we can deal with losing this election under a united front, but opposition politics cannot survive another election defeat by going it alone.

Seems like the coronation of Dobo is inevitable. Maybe a UDP coalition with GMC and OJ is the surest fast track to that avenue. Give it a go. When did you start liking the STGDP anyway Nyari.

For once try and reason. Yes you on record for everything.Yes the N.D.D.D & ITS M.O.U IS FOREVER RELEVANT Infact everything you genuinely said is relevant about the Gambia.

At least try and listen to a voice of reason. Gambians have only two months to decide either for freedom or another five or maybe forever of Yahya Jammeh and his tyranical policies.ies

There is barely enough time to go for priomaries at this point in time. That requires funds and casting of votes.

Ask yourself who is going to fund such primaries if you've got an answer to that,

Who would referee such primaries at this point in time I am sure the IEC would have to consult the government before venturing into such.
Gambia is not a democratic country and you know that therefore I think we both gearing towards putting in place a viable democracy for our people.

United we should do it but if for any reason others have a different view as to how it can be achieved now now by november, then UDP is ready to listen.

One thing UDP doesnot have enough funds for a primary at this point in time when elections are just around the corner.x

Hope we come a an agreement for the Gambia and not disagree just for the sake of it.

1. RELATED FOROYAA NEWS Editorial : OPPOSITION UNITY, TO BE OR NOT TO BE?

2. Refer on STGDP Press Release to critically read and analyse this section; to consider what is feasible, address theories, spinning and all sorts of posturing into practise

STGDP Press Release
"Talking about finding a deal; STGDP would like to surface critical issues we highlighted as very important if we are to find the compromise that can give us the deal for a united front.

we highlighted some of the critical issues we deemed to be areas that need to be confronted head on if we are to come up with the compromise for a coalition:

  • first, the selection of the leader of the united front to come from the largest opposition party,

  • secondly, both the campaign phase and the governance phase after the opposition defeats Jammeh should be reflective of all parties,

  • thirdly, the leader of the united front will be term limited during the transitional period and will not seek or support any candidate in 2016,

  • and finally the transitional period will be the period focused on the restoration of democracy in the Gambia.

3. To understand properly the political arguments, rational and decisions for consideration of this joint venture under a United Front; we need to start with few basic ideas concepts, terms, definitions and its application in politics; in order to highlight critical issues? So for a clear vision there are key elements to appreciate

Coalition
"A coalition is a pact or treaty among individuals or groups, during which they cooperate in joint action, each in their own self-interest, joining forces together for a common cause. This alliance may be temporary or a matter of convenience. A coalition thus differs from a more formal covenant. Possibly described as a joining of 'factions', usually those with overlapping interests rather than opposing"

Coalition are means-oriented arrangement, especially a temporary one, that allows distinct people or organizational entities to pool resources and combine efforts in order to effect change. The combination of such persons or entities into one body, as a union, variously organized and structured, but generally less formal than a covenant.

Although persons and groups form coalitions for many and varied reasons, the most common purpose is to combat a common threat or to take advantage of a certain opportunity; hence, the often-temporary nature of coalitions. The common threat or existence of opportunity is what gives rise to the coalition and allows it to exist.Such collaborative processes can gain political influence and potentially initiate social movements.

For example critical issues and the Organisational aspects; Primarily considers an Agenda for the meeting to include issues they should discuss and negotiate amongst others;

  • An MOU, Agreement, Pact or Treaty for Cooperation, Partnership, Solidarity & Joint Venture

  • Political platform or Party Name; For e.g N.A.D.D, United National Alliance, A.R.C, "United Progressive Alliance"

  • Common Cause, Goals, Objectives, Policies, Party Manifesto, Mechanism to manage difference in ideology & Establishing the Common ground

  • Priorities, Strategies & Tactics

  • Terms

  • Leadership

  • Legality, I.E.C Rules, The Constitution & Legal body/Structure

  • Political body, Executive/Steering Committee, Banner & Mission Statement

  • Registration

  • Term Limit

  • Framework, Communication & Modus Operandi

  • Allocation of Responsibilities, Mobilisation of Resources, Finance, Political bureau, Campaigning, Networks, and Central Controls ("reflective of all Parties")

  • Resolutions & Resolving Issues

  • Formal Structures Pre-Election (nominations & campaign), Post-Election & Transitional Arrangements

  • Ending & Dissolution

"Leadership" and/or the "Selection of a Leader" is all about "Power & Control" but may be amongst the Secondary issues in Coalition/Alliance/United Front? The modalities for the Coalition crowning of a Flag Bearer; must consider a criteria, the best possible or most suitable methods, pass certain tests and approval through consensus, general agreement or accord

Therefore each Political Party already resolved certain resolutions to address leadership amongst other critical issues? So on the table STGDP/UDP endorses "first, the selection of the leader of the united front to come from the largest opposition party,"; PDOIS proposing Primaries; NRP demanding Hamat Bah to lead, including other Political Parties? So in Participatory Democracy, Citizens plays an active role in decision-making! So to strike a balance, the popular demand prevails eventually? In that case UDP should have been prepared to put Lawyer Darboe's leadership on the line for a Coalition to be discussed and negotiated under very strong terms that favours them; as they edged other Opposition Parties. However for a credible leader other leadership factors do come into play? As it is not a Coalition government but a Coalition for a United Front, it is fair to say that UDP-Led Coalition does not have any place in the Coalition; if its "reflective of all parties" and other factors taken into account; especially mobilising without any legal loophole other than the Constitutional route of "Merger of Political Parties"? Section 91(1)(e) under The Gambia Constitution is relevant for reference on "Merger of Political Parties"?

Another point is that; if any party leader's bid became successful as Coalition Leader the clear mandate of Flag Bearer & Leader of The Coalition (or Alliance) is reflective of "merging all parties" under a united front, new Banner and Party Name? Lets bear in mind that its a Cross-Party Talks and all proposals/views/options must be thoroughly exhausted and considered; for ideal and right decisions to address all critical issues to harmonise a solid UNITY? These are my points amongst others

4. P.D.O.I.S ON PRIMARIES

"Our initial position is that we should put our party manifestoes aside and adopt a transitional arrangement which would enable only one candidate to be elected through an Inter party primary to stand for the opposition against the incumbent.

This person would help us to put an end to the tradition of holding political office for decades by accepting to be in office only for a period of 2 to 5 years so as to build the foundation for a genuine democratic society which would not exclude anyone on the basis of gender, ethnicity, or past political affiliations and then open both the public and private media to all the political and civic organisations in the country so that a genuine multi-party system could be put in place before the end of the transition.

The transitional government would include in its agenda Constitutional reform.

We include a two year transitional period so that APRC would not claim that what they did in two years could not be done by us within the same time frame.

We are fully confident that any Presidential candidate for the opposition who would be willing to swear before the whole nation that he or she would hold office only for two years just to enable the country to ensure proper utilization of public resources and build a genuine multi-party system, would certainly deserve a place equal to Nelson Mandela in world history.

I do not see how such a person could lose an election if he or she is genuine."
Halifa Sallah P.D.O.I.S

Halifa:Now that some people feel that a primary is going to be expensive we have taken a fall back position as recommended by some Gambians to recommend the holding of a Convention to which all parties will send 10 delegates from each administrative area. A list of prominent personalities in the opposition could also be jointly prepared. These people will be mandated to select one candidate for the opposition and decide whether the person stands on a party ticket or as an Independent Candidate.

"Time Constraints to be sorted by One Day National Convention
Halifa: This is why we in PDOIS are proposing a Convention which is a one day affair. In short, once a day for the Convention is mentioned the whole nation would be interested in knowing who the candidate of the opposition is going to be. If the international, regional and local media houses are involved and international, Regional and sub regional bodies are also invited to monitor the process there is no doubt that the candidate selected would have massive publicity and would stand a great chance of winning an election. The Convention would provide room for adequate campaign, nationally and internationally.

"PDOIS recommended that all opposition parties select 10 delegates from each of the seven electoral regions to attend a convention to elect one candidate for the contest to end President Jammeh’s 17-year-old rule. The recommendation states that all opposition parties would approve a list of wise men and women to participate as delegates, who would then elect one candidate by secret ballot.

It proposes the taking of an oath to serve only one term in order to rectify all the major shortcomings of the present order and then hand over to a democratically president.

“The local and international media and other important institutions in Africa and abroad would give coverage to the convention and provide enough publicity to the candidate nationally and internationally,” proposed the Gambian sociologist cum politician on behalf of his party.

Coming back Soon to continue

5. Jannyafara! These are your words as quoted;

"I swear if PDOIS or any of the other opposition parties are right now the closest more than the UDP to oust the tyranic Jammeh regime from office and UDP refuses to join you for what ever reason, I shall publicly declare my support for PDOIS. I joined the UDP under my own free will and any leader who would not listen to me even if you may not agree with me is in my opinion not capable to lead a fragmented Gambia. "" Janyafara

From your statements do you mean that PDOIS are not working to "mobilise together" with UDP or joining UDP and other opposition parties for "UNITY", "TACTICAL/STRATEGIC ALLIANCE", "PARTNERSHIP", "SOLIDARITY", "UNITED IN PURPOSE" & "UNITED IN ACTION"? Its beggars belief, unrealistic and very unbelievable? You may have better ideas on WHAT is feasible? HOW should or (HOW can) P,DOIS "join" UDP; especially clarifying on the table "UDP-Party Led" Position for a United Front/Alliance/Coalition better than PDOIS's position for United Front on table (explained and detailed clearly above)? It is not straight forward as you (the proponents, militants & supporters) may think amongst others? The idea for endorsing UDP to rule over other Opposition Political Parties and any propaganda to coerced other Opposition Parties to rally behind UDP; in Multi-Party Democracy cannot succeed period? Certain arguments are baseless and farced! If UDP Presidential candidate's bid is successful and Lawyer Ousainou Darboe is given the crown as Coalition leader; what he automatically became is flag bearer for a UNITED FRONT and not a "UDP-Led Government" during transitional period? So his mandate is to represent Coalition interests under its terms as agreed; which may eventually bring A GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL UNITY FOR OPPOSITION PARTIES OR A TRANSITIONAL NATIONAL COALITION GOVERNMENT

1. If Karamba Touray (UDP Foreign Affairs & Press) is not sure of reviewing any written document as proposals of UDP on United Front and/or what UDP outlined and tendered, how did "STDP learned details some of details of the UDP Plan For A United Front"

2. Is there any document on "UDP-Party led proposals" or what UDP outlined and tendered in Coalition talks; available in UDP website, Gambia newspapers, on-line media and public domain

3. For Hamat Bah/NRP, they have been silent for over 4years, never had a congress, they have no resolutions, they have nothing to proposed and there is no scenario he/NRP would join anyone; except others rally behind him & with them

4. Is it sensible for all other opposition parties to suspend/abandon participating under its Political Platform as a Political Party and rally under UDP ticket ("UDP-Led notion"); under multi-party and participatory democracy

MAAFANTA.COM Rejoinder on STGDP Press Release supporting/endorsing UDP initiative

"Rejoinder on STGDP Press Release supporting/endorsing UDP initiative"

Having reviewed, scrutinised the statements, details and considered certain ramifications of the STGDP Press Release published at Maafanta.com and captioned as “STGDP Supports UDP Initiative” and Senegambia On-line News/Media as “US-based STGDP endorses UDP Proposal for Opposition Alliance”; kindly provide space under opinions to publish these reservations and observations?

1. The Press Release would have been in order motivating progress and fruitful proceedings for coalition and united front; without these prejudicial statements attempting to dictate and/or pre-empt the issues in contention from Coalition talks proceedings in-progress ;

i. “STGDP Supports UDP Initiative” or “STGDP endorses UDP Proposal for Opposition Alliance”
ii. “STGDP is urging all the parties to support the UDP initiative on the table at this juncture because it contains all aspects of the policies highlighted in all the documents. It will give us a leader that has garnered largest votes ever gotten by an opposition leader. It will also give us a transitional leader that will be term limited after the transitional period, which directly addresses the safeguards and self-perpetuating rule in the NADD MOU, and in-depth relevant
policies issues highlighted in PDOIS agenda 2011. ”

2. Those statements connotes a sublime biased message and unilateral support for UDP from STGDP because they are supposed to be non-partisan, neutral and the justification that; “STGDP have learned some of the details of UDP for a United Front,....” but those proposals of which are not available or neither verifiable in UDP website, Gambain
on-line media/news and any Public domain is preposterous and deceptive; in the interests of transperency, probity and
informed decisions?

3. Things to edit; in my opinion? Refer on 1. i. Above and a better Captioned or Heading of The STGDP Press Release would have been “STGDP Supports Opposition Initiative” and “STGDP endorses Proposals for Opposition Alliance”? Also if whole of 1. Ii. are deleted completely from Press Release, STGDP would got the right message from the rest of statements remaining in Press Release; open for consideration to steer them towards the exercise of franchise and a democratic process for unity , consensus, setting good standards and precedence?

4. If UDP and other opposition parties participating in Coalition talks made resolutions and/or compiled a written document to support any credible purported proposals; let them publish it in its website and ensure wide public circulation to convince ordinary citizens accross all levels of Gambian community, what they are offering on the table respectively, clearly done by PDOIS published for the Nations’ citizens?

5. In my opinion this Press Release apears to serve as appeasement to UDP to cover recorded negative personal opinions of Banka Manneh –Secretary General of STGDP in Freedom radio programs, just few days before it was released and putting integrity of STGDP into question or at stake?

6. Finally “The opposition is still behind doors negotiating the terms to establish a United Front. Will they or will they not unite? That is the primary question. Some say the talks are already in tatters. However no opposition party has come out to say that it is out of the talks. Hence it could be fairly said that an announcement is what will make or break the camp of the opposition. The speculations should be put aside while we wait for the final announcement.“ SOURCE:
Foroya Editorial

Ps:These observations are from a concerned citizen, who is a keen observer of Political developments, well acquainted with activities/roles/excellence of STGDP , documentation of NADD MOU and NADD legacy.

Thanks."

LATEST UPDATE FROM GAINAKO NEWS WITH "A Citizen Appeals To The Opposition Parties In The Gambia; RE: Final Appeal for A Resolution to The Formation Of United Coalition For the 2011 General Elections"

1. EXTRACTED FROM ABOVE LINK FOR THIS QUOTE:

MUSA JENG STGDP
"Sir, couple of weeks ago, after a contentious debate, STGDP came out with a press release in support of the UDP proposal to the political parties for a united front. STGDP supported the UDP initiative because it represented the very proposal that we sent to all of you back in 2009 as the STGDP proposal.

MAAFANTA.COM
Rejoinder on STGDP Press Release supporting/endorsing UDP initiative is relevant and referred to the issues, substance and form for that PRESS RELEASE IN QUESTION?

However desperate STGDP became to see compromises, quick fixes, deals, settlements, agreement and final deal; that Press Release cannot be effective as it lacked substance in its form of presentation; appear to compromised "impartiality", "unsubstantiated" and/or "unverifiable" statements were there; to defend its stance, adoption and to support UDP "initiatives" and disposition on coalition proceedings still not yet concluded?

MUSA JENG STGDP
"Secondly, a huge concession that was made in regards to term limits and the transitional nature of the government was really seen by some of the members that UDP has climbed down their original position."

PDOIS's position for United Front on table, clearly explained and detailed under this link, was referred by STGDP in its Press Release, but which met STGDP NADD's criteria; was not reconciled and consolidated together to find the common ground with the alleged credible UDP proposals (accorded unilateral endorsement/ approval by STGDP but which cannot be accessed from UDP website or any other media, strictly confidential and not available for public information to take informed decisions and arrived at consensus)?

MUSA JENG STGDP
As we continue to believe that any deal is better than going it alone, STGDP wanted to speak with clarity and hope that it will give us the coalition we all yearn for, failure will only make opposition in the Gambia weaker and will pose a serious threat to the future viability of our country.

As we dash to the final lap before the slated November elections, we are beginning to settle for our worst fears of going into the 2011 elections without a united front, and everything should be looked at to see whether we can find common ground."

"Things to edit; in original Press Release to make it, "impartial", fair and balance and motivate them on task to unite; bringing it to what is being yearned for by above by Musa Jeng and widely popular or supported by other citizens?

Refer on 1. i. Above and a better Captioned or Heading of The STGDP Press Release would have been “STGDP Supports Opposition Initiative” (in Maafanta.com published Press Release) and “STGDP endorses Proposals for Opposition Alliance” (for Senegambia news.com)? Also if whole of 1. ii. are deleted completely from Press Release, STGDP would got the right message from the rest of statements remaining in Press Release; open for consideration to steer them towards the exercise of franchise and a democratic process for unity , consensus, setting good standards and precedence?"

FINALLY EDITED VERSION OF ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE TO ADDRESS THE OBSERVATIONS REVIEWED ABOVE AND TO SAVE STGDP FROM LOOSING ITS CREDIBILITY AS FOLLOWS;

"STGDP SUPPORTS THE OPPOSITION INITIATIVE(S)"
FOR MAAFANTA.COM)

OR

"STGDP ENDORSES PROPOSALS FOR OPPOSITION ALLIANCE"
(FOR SENGAMBIA.COM)

"As we wait patiently for the outcome of the coalition talks, it is very clear that a whole lot is riding on it, and in fact the future of our country is at stake.

These are all commendable coalition documents and without a doubt address the challenges we are faced with in our country and how to come together, but now is the time to make the bold concession and compromise on a plan that will bring all the parties under a big tent."

.............NOTE: Three complicated and troublesome sentences deleted here; as no one steals credibility and all of them set the task, under a cross-party platform to deliver in the interest of the Nation..............

"Please let us all come together and contest the 2011 election under a united front, and together we will give all Gambians the opportunity to vote and defeat president Jammeh.

Finally, we can deal with losing this election under a united front, but opposition politics cannot survive another election defeat by going it alone.

Go Tell Halifa to Join a UDP led Alliance

Dear Mr. Musa Jeng,

Thank you for your letter of 9th October 2011 which you duped ‘‘A Citizen’s Final Appeal for Compromise’’.

As you have already admitted, the UDP has made a concession to the PDOIS party by accepting and accommodating one of the key components of their Agenda 2011, i.e., the 5yr transitional term limit and all its attendant conditions, and unless that concession is reciprocated, it will be disingenuous and hypocritical for anybody to ask for further concession from the UDP. On that basis, I can categorically state that the UDP will give no consideration to Halifa Sallah’s latest convention proposal as it is not borne out of the need to engender compromise and promote national unity but intransigence. The proposal is also unheard of and based on no principle that underpins coalition building in the world that we live in.

In any compromise scenario, it is always a give and take process. The UDP has conceded the 5yr transition component of the PDOIS position and all its attendant conditions. Notwithstanding this, PDOIS continue to refuse to concede any element of the UDP proposals. Therefore, asking UDP to accept yet another Halifa Sallah position when their already made concession is not reciprocated by Halifa and PDOIS, is certainly not about engendering compromise but effectively calling for a coalition that is entirely based on the totality of Halifa Sallah’s will. I find that to be too insulting to the UDP leadership and their followers including my humble self.

In any case, unless PDOIS and Halifa reciprocate UDP's concession, it doesn't lie in their mouths to ask for further concession from the UDP. That being the case, I can assure you that no consideration will be given to your letter of 9th October 2011 by the United Democratic Party until at such time when UDP’s concession is fully reciprocated.

I hope you will use this opportunity to ask your advocacy group, Save The Gambia Democracy Project, to bear pressure on Halifa Sallah and ask him to do what is right and in the interest of the Gambian nation by joining the proposed UDP led alliance.

Your sincerely,

SS Daffeh

Hey Nyari, how is The Prophesy of Dobo unfolding? Why don't you leave Halifa alone and concentrate on fulfilling prophesy. You are almost there. Only three weeks to go.

Hey jerry jallow, how is the fundraising going for PDOIS? And what about an acknowledgement of the fact that STGDP comprises of gambians and thus, they matter in everything gambian. I don't agree with their strategy but I won't go as far saying they don't matter. As a matter of fact, every gambian matters.

Cheers

And what about STGDP? Are you saying they are anticipating the prophesy of Dobo too? I know STGDP to comprise honourable men and women who will always earn my respect because they are men and women of progressive principles and will never be trapped in clan and nepotistic mentality like you do. So what the hell are you on about?

FOR ATTENTION OF READERS TO SET RECORDS STRAIGHT:-

1. These exchanges between Musa and Daffeh are considered personal opinions; activism or militancy outside of Coalition proceedings and as stalled talks progresses; pending finalisation with either a deal or collapse without agreement and no deal? "LEADERSHIP GOES WITH RESPONSIBILITY AND NOT WHIMS OR CAPRICES"?

2. The consolation is that the destiny of The Gambia lies in the hands of sovereign Gambian citizen, so alienation, preposterous media propaganda, bad publicity, stealing credibility, blame game, smearing campaign, distortions and dis-orientation will not be entertained; under my watch as we endeavour to inform, sensitised and take right decisions on what is at stake for The Nation

3. "There is no need for any one to despair. Where there is sincerity, clarity and conviction all difficulties will be surmounted to attain victory. The people of the Gambia should pay a deaf ear to any political leader who seeks to sow the seed of despair. Leaders are inspirers and problem solvers and not prophets of gloom and doom. They create possibility where others see only impossibility. We therefore call on all political leaders who wish to earn respect to desist from claiming that a coalition between parties is made impossible by hatred and insincerity."PDOIS On Republican Day

4. "Coalitions are not formed based on love. Coalitions come about through the dictates of circumstances, interests, time and necessity." PDOIS On Republican Day

5. "In our view coalitions to contest elections and coalitions governments are ideal if they serve the interest of the people!"PDOIS 2011 Sensitisation Campaignd by kobo

6. To form a united opposition cannot be seen as a principle. The principle is to build a genuine opposition which could bring about a genuine multiparty system and genuine change. The building of a United Opposition is a tactic under conditions of governance which does not create options for genuine multi party contest."

"In my view those who are interested in change would be committed to the tactics but those who are not will always put their aspiration to occupy a post above the objectives of bringing about change to protect and promote the liberty, dignity and prosperity of the people"
Discourse With Halifa Sallah

7. "Political leaders and political activists should focus on combating political apathy and any division among the voters who want democratic change. Those who make it their duty to inspire the apathetic to become active and the voters who want change to endorse tactics and strategies that will unify them are part of the solution. Those who incite hatred among the voters and spread the view that the cause of democratic change is lost are part of the problem. They are the ones who will be indicted by history for having failed to act in accordance with the dictates of the public interest and the exigencies of our times and circumstances. "PDOIS On Republican Day

8. "We, the PDOIS leadership, are convinced that a Grand Coalition of the People is necessary and possible if democratic change is to be effected in 2011. We are convinced that there is no gulf that is wide enough between the opposition that cannot be bridged in the interest of the people."PDOIS On Republican Day

9. "We ask all our citizens to be an integral part of the change they seek by getting involved in whatever capacity suits them. Change is always a difficult task and along the way it is easy to become despondent, fearful, tired, angry, and sometimes be tempted to throw in the towel. But because the cause we have embarked upon is a just one that must be pursued, we must all strive harder to achieve these important goals. We however, can do it only if we come together as one and face the opponent. This cause is bigger than any individual or group of individuals." UDP Leader's New year message

10. Further more, "We are united in purpose but not united in achieving it.....Presently what we are not united on currently is matters of achieving our objectives and aims"

"I have never lost hope of having an opposition alliance; AND am optimistic come November 2011, there will be an opposition alliance. Am very much optimistic about that!"
Lawyer Ousainou Darboe UDP leader on WADR Interview

11. "In our view, opposites could be united by common interest, especially if the interest is the public interest. What is necessary is to create democratic instruments and institutions which could permit them to cooperate to serve the public interests despite their diversity. This is the mechanism which binds parliaments where one has opposition and ruling parties. It is instruments and institutions which enabled opposites to coexist in NADD. This is why we also instituted that if the party leaders did not agree on a candidate the people will be left to select one at a primary to ensure that a multi partisan choice of the people emerged. Since ultimate victory in an election would have to come from the votes of diverse party or non party members; PDOIS sacrificed its individual party interest to be part of NADD."PDOIS On Republican Day

12. "It is also important to point out that NADD was not preoccupied with the number of votes a person had in previous elections but was formed to ensure that our collective strength could enable an electable candidate to win" Discourse With Halifa Sallah

13. "In a normal multi party system each party should struggle to earn the trust and confidence of the people by its own policies. We do not have a normal multi party system. There is no second round. It is therefore prudent for the opposition to have their own first round as a tool to get every one involved. In our view, an alliance of the people irrespective of party affiliation is the most durable form of alliance. An Alliance of parties in the absence of a second round is proving through practice to be the least durable form of alliance since any party or individual could abandon the alliance at the eleventh hour and rely on the most precarious pretext to justify its action. We are firmly convinced that democratic change is desirable and possible and we will do our best to ensure that a viable opposition candidate emerges to contest the 2011 Presidential elections. This is the verdict of the popular will and common sense and it is incontrovertible." PDOIS On Republican Day

14. "We therefore hope that the leadership of all political parties in the country shall bear in mind that leadership is not an entitlement or a right ascribed to be monopolised by any particular individual, family, ethnic group or other lineages; on the contrary, it is a duty to be entrusted by the people, irrespective of their individual characteristics, to persons of their choice regardless of their origin. This duty to lead should be performed to promote the welfare of all, without fear or favour, affection or ill will."

"This calls for them to innovate strategies and tactics to overcome the disadvantage. The Gambian people should evaluate each strategy and tactics to determine what could be more effective in yielding the desired results. The entire wrangling or clamour between so called UDP and PDOIS supporters is not based on evaluation of strategies and tactics put forward by the two parties to effect democratic change in 2011."
PDOIS New Year Message

15. FOR A UNITED FRONT/COALITION/ALLIANCE RECENTLY HALIFA SALLAH PDOIS IS ON RECORD TO BE QUOTED;

"I don't know how the term (a divided opposition) emerged. A multi-party system presupposes the existence of many parties. Political parties are bound to have divergent views. If people want coalitions, they should just advocate for it without castigating the opposition. Coalitions are strategic and tactical instruments. Their nature and characteristics are determined by the realities on the ground. We stand for the creation of a grand alliance for change. Others may wish to stand alone."

"The alliance of all forces that want change is indispensable, if change is to be effected. All those who sincerely want change must work to create a grand Alliance for change."

16. The opposition is still behind doors negotiating the terms to establish a United Front. Will they or will they not unite? That is the primary question. Some say the talks are already in tatters. However no opposition party has come out to say that it is out of the talks. Hence it could be fairly said that an announcement is what will make or break the camp of the opposition. The speculations should be put aside while we wait for the final announcement. Foroya Editorial
