The social networking site Badoo has polled 30,000 people from 15 countries and come up with a list of the coolest and least cool folk on the planet. Starting with the apparently least hip, we consider the Germans - at fifth place. We're stumped - how can a country that hosts the International Beard Championships not be considered cool?

Canada makes the uncool list despite quirky Montreal and arty Toronto.

True, there's little stylish about the high rise resorts clutching on to much of the Turkish coastline, but surely Istanbul adds a whopping amount of kudos?

Despite Warsaw picking up in popularity as a city-break destination, it still occupies the dreaded second spot among most uncool countries.

The film In Bruge might not have done much for Belgian street cred, but we don't know if we'd agree that Belgians are really the least cool folk on the planet. What about the superb chocolate they've given the world? That's pretty cool

And now to the world's most apparently groovy peoples. Among Russia's stand-out attractions are the two very cool cities of St Petersburg and Moscow; both play on the contrast between remnants of the Soviet era, exquisite earlier architecture and ridiculous bling.

From the tango bars of Buenos Aires to the frequently gorgeous residents themselves, from a perfectionist attitude to steak to exploring the lonely and magical Patagonian steppe - what's not to like?

Mexico's edginess probably adds somewhat to its cool factor - you can visit the safe confines of Cancun, venture to the wider, thriving sprawl of Mexico City or get lost in some Mayan ruins.

Most visitors to the Netherlands arrive via Amsterdam, which is arguably one of the coolest little cities, intersected with a series of canals and leafy walkways. Although admittedly, after a bite of one of those space cakes, everything seems rather chilled out...

Cool Britannia? Apparently so. The royal wedding and the impending Olympics probably have a lot to do with our not-bad sixth spot among cool nations. Perhaps we can climb even higher with the games taking place next year.

The French do fashion better than any other nation, mainly because it seems so effortless for them. You'll find these beautifully attired creatures in all manner of places from tiny bistros to posh Parisian bars. Oh, and they can lay claim to the most elegant breakfast snack - the croissant.

Among the coolest aspects of Italy for travellers are the fashion scene in Milan, the art of Florence and Rome and the laidback rustic towns of the south.

The nation that brought us la Tomatina - the wonderfully messy tomato festival - also has the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao and the all-round cool city of Barcelona. Possibly the coolest thing about Spaniards is their struggle to retain the siesta, that wonderful three-hour hiatus in the afternoon.

Almost at the top spot, Brazilians do cool effortlessly. From the beautiful, bikini-clad bodies in Rio de Janeiro to the thriving food scene in São Paulo, we can't get enough. And when you mix in that samba beat and the coolest Carnival (with a capital C) on Earth...

Americans might not make the coolest tourists, but there's a lot about the US that makes it a great travel experience. Cities such as New York, Miami and San Francisco have some of the best shopping and nightlife in the world, while New Orleans, Nashville and Chicago showcase some of the best of American music - from folk to blues.
