In the recently concluded tour of the NRR, the people of Farafenni reported the following to Aji Yamu Secka and her UDP female wing entourage;
1. Mr. Kebba Janneh reported that since 2008, the people of Farafenni are buying water from the Area Council at a cost of D0.50 per 20litre drum and the money is never ploughed back to them.
2. Binta Marong reported that some houses were destroyed in Farafenni due to a natural disaster but house owners who are perceived as opposition sympathisers received no support from the National Disaster Agency.
3. Jarra Jawara urged the women of the area to forge a better life for themselves by voting Darboe rather than clapping and dancing for President Jammeh who is only interested in enriching himself. 4. In Tambakoto and Kattaba in the Sabach Sanjal District, the villagers spoke of their surprise by the APRC announcement that they have defected from the UDP. Speaker after Speaker reaffirmed their allegiance to the UDP. The final speaker, Nyima Sanneh then declared that the people of Kattaba are still behind UDP. She thank AJi Yamu Secka for the visit. 'We will campaign hard for the party this year'', she concluded.

Gambia is a poor country,but value for money here is good ,Gambians must realise that NOTHING IS FOR NOTHING and everything COSTS MONEY.

Toubab, I was born in the knowing that water in The Gambia is free except if you want a tap(s) in your private home in which case you will have to pay a bill to NAWEC, not your Area Council.
We don't pay for water drums or public taps. It is the tax money that pays for that and that is why it was resisted in Brikama and never tried elsewhere during Jawara days.

As opposed to what's happening in Farafenni, The UDP will;
1. Institute a decentralised system of local government administration with local council having significant autonomy.
2. Repeal the Local govt. Act 2007 to ensure that our local govt. administration is purely based on democratically elected councils as opposed to presidential appointments
3. Allocate central govt. funding to local councils to augment local revenue and promote the equitable distribution of state resources thereby narrowing the disparity in the quality of public services in different regions of the country
4. Institute an efficient tax collection regime that would allow the local councils to widen their revenue base but at the same time make them accountable for such taxes.
5. All Area councils will be audited twice a year and an audited report presented to the National Assembly at the end of the financial year.
6. The central govt. will reserve powers to rain in and discipline rogue councils whose behaviour are not congenial to the desires of their people.
7. The people will have an opportunity to change their council or councillors and chairmen/mayor every four years.
8. Chairmen/women and mayors will not serve more that 2 terms of four yrs. This is to avoid self perpetuation and to promote efficiency.
Compare these to the status quo and you will be left with no choice but to vote Darboe in the November 24th Elections.

"public taps" I wish that I could remember EXACTLY where in the Gambia I was during the last couple of years when I was told that water was charged at D1 for filling your own containers at the rate of D1 per 20 ltrs , there was a man to collect this money from the locals filling their own containers,it could of course have been a man who had invented a small unauthorised business,I have no idea as to the destination of the money collected,but its very unlikely that this was a scam as the locals wouldn't stand for that I am certain,any body else expand on this ? |

Toubab, couple of yrs ago, gambia was still under jammeh. So it shouldn't be a surprise that such an anormaly was happening. The point is, it's wrong because councils are collecting tax to provide such services and yet the people are mot seeing anything back. Not even their rubbish are being collected now.
