2. DAILY OBSERVER NEWS GSIC prezy: We are not politicians

"Wednesday, September 14, 2011

The president of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC) has reaffirmed that the Council members are not politicians, but rather scholars who are implementing the activities of the Islamic body geared towards promoting the propagation of Islam in the country.

Imam Momodou Lamin Touray made the statement Tuesday afternoon at his office at the Council’s headquarters on MDI Road during an exclusive interview with this reporter.

When asked why Gambian Muslims are divided when observing Koriteh on the same month, something that has become a deep-rooted tradition, the erudite imam explained that even before the establishment of the Council, Gambian Muslims were not praying on the same day.

He said this always instigates confusion among people, noting that the worrisome situation has now become a cause for concern.

“There are no two prayers and two fasting anywhere. What is written in the Quran is if somebody, a Muslim in any country said he or she has sighted the moon, people should fast, and if it is a prayer, they should do as well,” he said.

He rubbished as “baseless” and “mistaken” people who portray GSIC’s image the other way by counting them as politicians, stressing that the Islamic body is working closely with the government for the development of Islam in the country and beyond.

He urged Gambians to come together and unite in the interest of Islam, stressing that the religion is all about unity and togetherness, as well as helping one another.

Imam Touray maintained that GSIC has no bone of contention with anyone, stressing that they are here to ensure that Islam is developed and promoted in the country.

The GSIC president further challenged every Gambian and non-Gambian alike who has any issue against the Council with clear evidence to come on board and settle the matter.

He stated further that it will be difficult for the Islamic religion to be developed in the country without unity among Muslims. He finally seized the opportunity to enjoin parents to send their children to Islamic education institutions for them to acquire more knowledge.
