It is not good to make hurried judgements about anything,Gambian men WORKING full time and doing overtime and not getting paid,although I do not know it MAYBE that there is no more work for these employees to do because there is no more funded projects,you cannot expect a company to keep paying their employees if there is no work for them to do.Nothing is ever certain in the construction industry,its a way of life you go where the work is,no work no job, you move on,but in Gambia where do you move on to for another job?
Anyone heard about NEW funded construction projects in Gambia ?

200 Ballast Nedam employees claim ‘unlawful sacking’

More than 200 staff of Ballast Nedam, a Dutch construction firm currently operating in The Gambia, have launched a complaint on Monday at the Labour office in Fajara, claiming unlawful sacking.

Speaking to the Daily Observer, Manjike Touray, a former truck driver at the firm, said that they received their letters of termination on the 14 of August 2011 from MA Trading, the mediator between them and Ballast Nedam. He revealed that their employers indicated in their termination letters that they were not satisfied with their work and told them to go on vacation.

He said he had been working at Ballast for the past five years and that he worked 7am to 7pm, from Monday to Friday and on Saturday and Sunday he worked for 14 hours but that he had never being paid for all that he worked for especially his overtime hours.

Touray went on to explain that they worked for 88 hours in the month on week days and 138 hours on weekends every month but never been paid anything more than 70 hours, from which they are also deducted sometimes. “We have neither been on vacation nor given a rest on public holidays. If any employee fails to turn up you are sacked and this is the only job that we and our families rely on”, he added and went on: “We are maltreated unlike other nationalities in the company.

We are transferred anyhow with a short notice in which we have to pay for our shelter and feeding. I am still paying rent in three different parts of the country because of the untimely transfers to the provinces.

There was a time when the company brought some students from overseas for us to teach them the practical aspect of the work and at the end of the training the machines that we were using were later given to the students that we taught and we were left with nothing”. Zakariaya Beyai, also a former staff of also expressed similar sentiments.

Other victims also complained of the attitude of one Andrew Donnal, whom they said, sacks people with no genuine reason and will always say: “Gambia is nice, you hire and fire people anyhow”.

However, this reporter also visited the Labour Department in Fajara for them to shed light on the issue. Lamin Bojang, a senior officer at the said Department said they are working on the problem and have summoned MA Trading to a meeting.
