"PDOIS wrote to UDP before its Congress to indicate to them that the party was waiting for the resolution of the UDP Congress on inter party unity in order to know what form of Alliance could be forged for 2011. "
Kobo, I was relying on your expertise to bring forward the statement you have just quoted. I know it was there, for I remember reading about it somewhere. Anyway, thank you very much for your contribution.
Nyari has been all over the place casting aspersions on people's character; laying the blame on someone's doorstep except his own doorstep. And all the time fixated on this rigid, one-sided notion that promotes everything UDP and damns everything else. This is not healthy. And you want people to take you seriously.
We have to remember that all of us in this coalition effort have our own interests to protect. But there is an interest which is greater than all of our interests, and that is the national interest.
But how do we define the national interest against all of our individual and party interests?
If Nyari was listening, and really want to forge a credible and strong coalition, he should have been open minded and accommodating.
But all I hear is that the UDP is the biggest party; we will not form any coalition outside what is the norm and universally accepted standard of coalition building everywhere else.
But the Gambia is different and our circumstances are different also. And Nyari is not making it any easier because we do not know where he and his party stands on a host of issues, because there is no extensive literature by Nyari or his party on most of the issues that would concern us, particularly if we want to form a government based on a party-led idea.
The first issue that would concern us is the nature of the government formed on a party-led coalition. Would it be a transitional government or not?
The government that would be formed through the person elected as president, would have a mandate to serve for 5 years. And there is nothing in our laws that will prevent that person elected president to seek reelection for another five years.
This is one area in which there should be concrete agreements and concessions before other parties may join the party-led bandwagon.
And what are the concessions? To change the nature of our government? |

Sankalanka . on your question with "But how do we define the national interest against all of our individual and party interests? "
LAWYER DARBOE UDP LEADER ALREADY ANSWERED THAT WITH THIS DECLARATION IN NEW YEAR MESSAGE
"We ask all our citizens to be an integral part of the change they seek by getting involved in whatever capacity suits them. Change is always a difficult task and along the way it is easy to become despondent, fearful, tired, angry, and sometimes be tempted to throw in the towel. But because the cause we have embarked upon is a just one that must be pursued, we must all strive harder to achieve these important goals. We however, can do it only if we come together as one and face the opponent. This cause is bigger than any individual or group of individuals."UDP Leader/Lawyer Ousanou Darboe

Yes, Kobo. Lawyer Darboe gave a very nice definition, and I agree with what is stated therein. Once again, thanks for bringing in all these wonderful quotations. |
