You may have better luck finding Gambian roommates through the local Gambian shops in the New York metro area. Or try the NY Gambian Association.
If you're still unlucky, you could try your local Craigslist site.

The downside with craigslist is; it is a spray and pray game (looking through a bunch of ads with the hope that you'll find a great roommate).
Craigslist's main advantage is you could find a Native Speaker who'll help improve your colloquial American English...and hence help u assimilate much easier.
I have seen instances of Africans living together: It is typically a situation of the blind leading the blind with misrepresented "hearsay." Also, be forewarned that living with Gambians is characterize with envy, petty gossips, and people trying to get free-rides by manipulating their way out of paying their fair share of bills.
