The Ferry Service Needs Revamping The Current Poor and Unpredictable Service is Unsustainable By Publisher on 14-03-11 (23 reads) News by the same author
The situation of the Barra/Banjul ferry service is becoming a matter of great concern. For sometime now passengers of the ferries have been complaining of the slow service due to long queues, fewer ferries in operation and the slow speeds of the ferries. Now matters have become worse – only one ferry (Kanilai) was in operation for more than a week. At the time of going to press we received information that Barra is in operation. The other two ferries (Barra and Johe) are waiting for spare parts. Johe was purchased at a cost of D45.5 million and was commissioned on 7 June 2002, while Kanilai was commissioned on 25 July 2005. Each trip was expected to take 35 minutes but now it takes between 45 minutes to one hour, indicating the need to overhaul or more probably to replace the ferries. It is for experts to determine whether the ferries in use are durable enough or whether we need to get more durable and cost effective ferries.
If indeed there will be replacement, how soon will that be? What is the current reality? Have the spare parts arrived or is putting Barra back into operation a temporary coping mechanism? The public need to know. Foroyaa will attempt to interview management on the reality and future plans.
Needless to say, the ferry service is an important lifeline in our economy and its health can contribute significantly not only to the economy but to the social and other needs of the society. Cutting off Barra from Banjul is unthinkable, but relying on not quite reliable ferries can lead to disappointment. It is safer to take pre-emptive measures than to allow the worst to happen and later express regret. A government at the service of the people cannot but be transparent and responsive to their needs.

Very good and important news from Foroyaa. The questions and concerns raised in the piece reveals great understanding of the issue. A systematic approach from the side of the management, a management that is truly worth it's salt, is what is required to solve this BANJUL-BARRA transportation trouble once and for all. The main thing here is Competence, competence and competence! |

Greater competition is an alternative remedy to this problem. Just maybe the government could start to put out tenders for private businesses to take over the ferry services. If they aren't able to guarantee and maintain an efficient quality service. That way more investment could go in the overhauling and maintaining the current fleet. This would also reduce overloading the ferries.
