Dailynews Editorial: Tribute to Hon. Bekai Camara
Monday, March 07, 2011
A Son of the Nation Departs

The departure of Hon. Bekai Camara, National Assembly member for Wuli East constituency from the face of this earth is a sad event that shocks the nation. His demise is an immeasurable lost.
Camara has throughout his life been at the service of his nation and humanity. He served as president of the Gambia Association of Physically Disabled. As a journalist, he served as president of the Network of Journalists on Population and Development and at the time of his demise, he was the vice chairman of the National Assembly Select Committee on Environment.
Bekai who demised with his portfolio as chairman of the Commission on Policy and Legislation, West African Network of Parliaments on Environment and Climate Change lived his life with public spirit.
Listeners of the state-owned GRTS Radio formerly Radio Gambia will vividly remember the voice that used to announce in a tone of clarity, especially in Soninke (Sarahule) language from 1990 to 1994. Those who have been reading The Gambia Weekly (now The Gambia Info) from 1998 – 1990 will also see his imaginary byline on the tabloid with their nostalgic eyes and bereaved hearts.
His determination and dedication led to his elevation to the position of an assistant producer at GRTS, a position he held from 2003 to 2007.
He is an admiration, for he has never wasted his time. He bagged a diploma in Gender and Development, Management Studies, Post Graduate Diploma in Population and Development. Because of his thirst for knowledge, he was undergoing a distance learning course up to the time of his demise.
Acquaintances say, Bekai is a humanist, well cultured, respectful and considerate gentleman who is courteous in going about thing in life.
He passed away as a servant of the people. The people of Wuli East, the nation and humanity have lost him but his good works stay for posterity. The honorable members of the Gambia’s National Assembly have indeed lost a great colleague.
People who lived by serving the people are never losers. Such people continue to live in memories even if they are no longer on earth. The worth of a human being does lie in what eminent bronze statue is erected in memory of the person but eminent of all are the selfless services the person rendered to humanity.
His engagement in politics has not made enemies for him, but real friends. He has manifested his political tolerance by being in good friendship with a parliamentarian whom many believe belongs to an opposition party that is overly critical to the ruling of which Camara is a member.
Bekai has gone but still remained in our midst in spirit.
We, at The Daily News are sending our heartfelt condolence to the entire family of the depart soul, members of the National Assembly, the government and the entire nation.
May his soul rest in perfect peace

"The cause of his death is unclear." ?

How old was Mr Camera ?

Had he been ill?

Had he had an accident?

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.

May His Soul Rest In Peace.

Bekai lived a very productive life. He served with utmost commitment. He was a joyous man and very much into society. No mistake that he ascended to the high seat of MP for his area and died peacefully in dignity. So simple and down-to-Earth a man.
