https://foroyaa.net/operation-zero-crime-police-round-up-56-individuals-at-brufut-madiana-forest/

Fifty-six (56) individuals were on Friday rounded up by Police detectives at Brufut/Madiana forest.

This came barely weeks after a man was murdered and dumped at the aforesaid forest. An operation was launched on 21st May 2021, to curb crimes including robberies, murders, killings and thefts that have become rampant in the country.

These crimes have given security agencies headache and also installed fear in the minds and hearts of many Gambians. In a bid to tackle the growing concerns of all and sundry, the Police instituted a task force dubbed “Operation Zero Crime” which has since its inception launched its second phase of operation.

The new operation is different from the previous one as all police heads are taking part in this latest operation. The Police spokesman, Superintendent (Spt.) Lamin Njie, confirmed that they were busy all these days constituting a taskforce to ensure criminal activities were combatted.

Njie said the suspects were arrested during a mass operation in Brufut, saying the raid was conducted inside the forest, communities and the beach site as well.

“Of course, it is all part of the operation zero crime and it’s going to be an ongoing process. In fact, we have launched the second phase of operation zero crime day before yesterday (Friday). So, is like taking the zero crime to another level,” he said.

During the operation on Friday, he said detectives were able to discover some non-Gambians residing at the beach. He added that the individuals were not living in an appropriate manner at the beach

He said these people have been handed over to the Department of Immigration for further investigation and regulation of documentation,” Njie explained.

Meanwhile, a Police media dispatch stated on Friday that: “The High Command of West Coast Region under the leadership of the Regional Police Commissioner, conducted a robust patrol at the Brufut and Madiana forest, amidst reports of criminal activities within and around the forest.

“The patrols were equally expanded to the coastal beaches and criminal hideouts leading to the arrest of 56 suspects currently helping with investigations.

“Majority of the suspects are non-Gambians, and as a result they have been handed over to the Immigration Department for appropriate actions,” said the Police.

This initiative appears to be successful with many suspects arrested and being processed and maybe appearing before the Courts,as i mentioned before in a previous posting here that an education programme should run in conjuuction with this, culture change that is underway in Gambia,do not let these changes be tossed into the long grass and get forgotten due to "delays and inaction".

Transparency and Accountability in the Police
By Madi Jobarteh

It is indeed gratifying, reassuring and progressive that the Police High Command made this remark in its statement,

“The public is assured that, the conduct of the security personnel shall be strictly within the confines of the Law. To ensure this, the Police High Command has instituted a strong Inspectorate Unit to regularly supervise and monitor the activities of security personnel, in a bid to ensure respect for human rights and the rule of Law.”

This is the crux of the matter. It shows that the police is aware of their duty and powers and that they must be accountable. As a human rights protection body it is just natural that human rights and adherence to the rule of law are always in the centre and front of their work!

Without accountability we cannot guarantee success and results. It is only when we institute accountability systems and enforce them that we will succeed in having a professional, effective and results oriented police hence combat crime effectively.

The Police High Command should go further to share numbers and contacts points in the police with the general public to report any cases of police misconduct.

Who is in charge of this Inspectorate Unit? How does one contact them if you are in Boraba or Basse or Kerewan or Banjul etc? What are their numbers or emails? Where are their offices? How does one lodge a complaint? Etc. etc. etc.

Then the police must make sure periodically to announce to the public the complaints they have received from the public and which ones were addressed or not and why. The list of officers who have been sanctioned must be named as well. Etc. etc. etc.

This is the kind of transparency and accountability that will cleanse the police off of bad cops and misconduct. That is what helps the political to become a truly people’s service!

Keep up the good work.
