BBC: Published on 13 May 2015
A coup attempt has been launched in Burundi to try to overthrow President Pierre Nkurunziza, amid unrest over his bid to be re-elected to a third term.
Thousands of people in the capital, Bujumbura, celebrated the announcement by Major General Godefroid Niyombare.
But the coup outcome is far from clear.
The presidency said it had been foiled. Mr Nkurunziza left a summit he was attending in Tanzania to try to return home but some unconfirmed reports say his plane has now returned to Tanzania.
Gen Niyombare said in a radio address he had ordered "the closure of the airport and border, and I ask every citizen and law enforcement down to the airport to protect it".
Mr Nkurunziza had been in Dar es Salaam to discuss the crisis with regional leaders. Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete said the summit condemned the coup.

BBC: 23 May 2015
The leader of a small Burundian opposition party has been shot dead in the capital Bujumbura, witnesses said, as tensions continue in the country.
The body of Zedi Feruzi, the head of the Union for Peace and Development, was seen lying outside his home.
Burundi has seen weeks of protest against President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to run for a third term.
Demonstrators are holding a two-day truce, to allow residents to stock up on supplies and bury the dead.
On Friday, at least two people were killed in a grenade attack in Bujumbura.
The unrest has also seen more than 100,000 people flee to neighbouring countries and a failed coup attempt against Mr Nkurunziza.

Gervais Abayeho said those arrested on Friday were two army generals, including former Defence Minister Cyrille Ndayirukiye, and a police general. The coup leader's spokesman, Venon Ndabaneze, confirmed to the AFP news agency by phone that organisers of the coup had decided to surrender when loyalist troops arrested him, deputy coup leader Cyrille Ndayirukiye and another senior figure among the mutineers. "We decided to give ourselves up. We have laid down our arms. We have called the security ministry to tell them we no longer have any arms," Ndabaneze said, seconds before he could be heard being arrested. SNIPPET: "One senior military source told BBC Afrique that loyalist troops had seized back full control of the presidential palace, the national radio and television station, the airport and the centre of Bujumbura.
BBC correspondents there say the streets seem to be mainly in the control of loyalist police, and the airport has reportedly reopened, which would appear to confirm reports it too is in loyalist hands.
But heavy fighting continues around the state radio and television broadcaster RNTB, with troops backing the coup seen trying to gain entry to the building.
Control over the national broadcaster is key because it is the only outlet still broadcasting outside the capital, the BBC's Maud Jullien reports."
