Well.. who would have thought that such a change could not be located in any record in any government ministry.

Press release

“The General Transport Union has conducted extensive research into the laws surrounding the issuance and validity of driver’s licences.

Section 27(3) of the Motor Traffic Act provides as follows:

“A driver’s licence other than a provisional driver’s licence shall, unless previously revoked or surrendered, remain in force for a period of three years from the date on which it’s issued”.

It is clear from the above that, the law requires that driver’s licence should be valid for a period of three years from the date of issuance.

The current practice, however, is that driver’s licence are issued for a period of one year and they all expire on the 31st of December regardless of the date on which it was issued.

This is contrary to the provision of the law upon which all licences should be issued.

Further research has been conducted in a bid to understand the basis for which the practice of one-year licencing came into being.

It is baffling to note that after rigorous consultations with the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Transport, and Gambia Police Force, as key actors and players; no laws, regulations, policies, statutes, or administrative directives could be traced to explain the basis for the current practice.

The leadership of the General Transport Union is vigorously consulting with relevant authorities to ensure redress and compliance with the law in the soonest possible time.

The Executive of the General Transport Union is taking this opportunity to remind the government of its sacred duty of upholding the law and ensuring its organs operate within the confines of the laws.

The public is assured that the union will follow up on this matter to ensure compliance with the law.”

Following the recommendations of The Gambia Transport Union on the duration of validity of driver’s license, The General Transport Union has conducted extensive research into the laws surrounding the issuance and validity of driver’s licenses.

Section 27(3) of the Motor Traffic Act states that: “A driver’s license other than a provisional driver’s license shall, unless previously revoked or surrendered, remain in force for a period of three years from the date on which it’s issued.”

On the contrary in The Gambia, a driver’s license is valid for one year and expires on 31st December regardless of the date issued.

After a research by The Gambia Transport Union stakeholders to understand the basis of which the one year validity came into being, they assured the public that the union would follow up on the matter to ensure compliance with the law..

Drivers who spoke to our reporter in an interview on the recommendations made by The Gambia Transport Union on the validity of the driver’s license called for adherence to what the law says on the validity of the driver’s license.

Malick Baldeh, a driver said if the recommendations are implemented it would help them. He explained that the three years validity period will favour them when implemented, adding that the Government and the Transport Union should try to reach an agreement in order to help reduce the struggle they go through in processing and getting their licenses.

Alagie Secka, also a driver said renewing their driver’s license every year is a burden to them and therefore called on authorities to abide by what the law says.

He applauded The Gambia Transport Union for their efforts in carrying out the research.

He stated that, there are insufficient job opportunities in The Gambia, noting that driving is his only way of earning a living. He pointed out that even though the job does not pay much, it does not stop them from renewing their licenses yearly.
