Survey reveals gov’t failing in major sectors

A survey conducted by the Center for Policy, Research and Strategic Studies (CepRass) has revealed that The Gambia government is failing in almost all sectors.
CepRass as part of efforts to strengthen democracy in The Gambia recently conducted surveys focusing on the performance of Barrow since re-election and the parliamentary election aimed at bringing to light key governance issues in the run up to the 9th April polls.
Presenting the findings funded by National Endowment for Democracy (NED) on Wednesday at NaNA Conference Hall, Dr. Mustapha Jobateh, senior consultant for CepRass, said 66% of respondents interviewed disagree that The Gambia government is committed to addressing corruption.
On health, the survey revealed that 52 percent disagree or think otherwise that government plans to increase access to health services.
On Education, the survey revealed that 60 percent of respondents said The Gambia education does not prepare students for job market.
“Prices have been increasing rapidly since the re-election of President Barrow in December 2021. The government, though the Central Bank and its fiscal policy stands, can trigger price stability. However, 85 percent of respondents either disagree or strongly disagree that the government has done enough to stabilize prices,” the survey reveals.
Agriculture retains a critical role in economic growth in The Gambia, even as the share of services in GDP is increasing. Agriculture and related industries contribute to economic growth, employment, poverty reduction, food security and nutrition but when asked if government is committed to supporting farmers, a substantial majority of respondents said they either disagree or strongly disagree.
Farmers in The Gambia have said in the past that they will not sell their groundnuts to government on the grounds that government usually buys their groundnuts at a very low price.
Crime levels in The Gambia have been relatively low historically. However, the National Guard was called on in June 2021 to stage day and night patrols in multiple areas in support of the police, in response to a surge in murder and armed robbery. About 76% have reported that the level of domestic crime rate has either increased or increased rapidly.
Security Sector Reform has been implemented in The Gambia since 2017. Policy framework has also been developed. However, 41 percent of respondents either disagree or strongly disagree that government is still interested in Security Sector Reforms.
On decentralisation, most respondents said government is not interested in subventing Local Governments.
Half of respondents also said Gambia’s bilateral relations with Senegal are exploitative and not beneficial to The Gambia. Forty-nine percent of respondents believe that government is not committed to women in leadership. Fifty-two percent of respondents declared that government performance on youth development is poor.
The Center for Policy, Research and Strategic Studies (CepRass) is an academic and policy research institute based in The Gambia. The Institute is mainly engaged in research, consultancy and training for private and public institutions within and outside The Gambia.

And the perception of the respondents on this indicator is generally low accounting for 36% consisting of 3 percent claimed excellent, while 33% responded ' good'.
On the other hand, 52% declared it poor with 10% rating it ‘very poor’, while 42% rate it as poor. Only 11% said they have no idea or do not know.
The opinion survey assessed government’s performance on youth development across the LGAs. During the survey, Upper River and Central River Regions registered the highest above 40 percent as good, followed by West Coast Region and Banjul City Council accounting for nearly 40%.

========== https://standard.gm/gambia-news/gdc-says-ceprass-opinion-poll-not-credible0/ ==========
By Tabora Bojang on April 8, 2022
The opposition Gambia Democratic Congress has rubbished the latest opinion poll of the Centre for Policy, Research, and Strategic Studies, CepRass, calling it ‘misleading’ and ‘does not reflect facts on the ground’.
The CepRass survey released on Wednesday predicted the National Peoples Party of President Adama Barrow would win the majority of seats in Saturday’s parliamentary polls with 30.19 percent while its opponents, including the UDP and GDC would share the remaining. The poll indicates the ruling NPP remains strong on the back of its victory in the presidential election while the opposition stands to lose grip of some of its strongholds.
However, in a write-up shared with The Standard, GDC national youth president Mc Cham Jr, called on Gambians to ignore the report, saying it doesn’t represent the current political realities on the ground.
Cham is contesting the Jeshwang seat on the GDC ticket and argued that the outcome of these National Assembly elections cannot be predicted using the presidential election. He called it a strategy to fool the masses into falling for the Barrow-led party.
“But it would not happen. We have seen members of political parties shifting their support to candidates of other parties and independents based on individual competency. The general belief in this election is about the competency of an individual and one who can hold the government accountable to encourage the spirit of checks and balances. CEPRASS election polls have never been close to the outcome of any election result as in the last mayoral elections, their prediction was the opposite of the final. The targeted respondents from whom the report was generated are less than 1% of the electorate in a constituency, so on that background, it is baseless to come up with a poll that no one can justify or see it happening,” Mr Cham said.
He argued that many electorate in his constituency are unaware of the survey.
“In my house-to-house campaign, I have visited almost all the compounds in Jeshwang Constituency and no one knows the existence of such polls, so this begs the question how did they arrive at such a false conclusion? I urge the opposition to remain firm and know that this poll wouldn’t influence the outcome of the National Assembly elections. We are the ones who have direct contact with almost all the electorate,” Cham said. |
