Police have confirmed that 10 people died when two vehicles collided at Faraba on Friday. The dead included the driver of one of the vehicles involved, a Gele-gele.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that, a Gele-gele and a truck were all speeding from different directions around the sharp bend near Faraba when they collided.

“Currently both the driver of the truck who unlawfully permitted his unlicensed apprentice to drive the truck and the apprentice himself are in police custody helping with the investigations,” the police PRO told The Standard.

He urged drivers to observe speed limits and employ due diligence while driving and avoid permitting apprentices to drive their vehicles

Magistrate Peter Adoh Che of Brikama on Monday sentenced one Momodou Faye, the owner of the truck that killed 13 people in an accident in Faraba last month.

Faye was fined one thousand dalasi in default to serve 1-year jail term for permitting an un-licensed driver, his apprentice Alieu Jadama to drive his truck leading to the accident that killed about 13 people in Faraba village on March 4.

Mr Faye’s conviction and sentencing came after the court found him guilty of a single charge of permitting un-licensed driving.

Prior to the sentencing, the convict begged the court to temper justice with mercy, arguing that it was a mistake which has never happened to him. He also said he is married to a sick lactating mother who needs care and he is the only one who can provide for her and the child.

Nfamara Saidy, an official of the Gambia Transport Union, intervened to plead with the court for mercy for Mr Faye, whose father he claimed is also sick and gone abroad for treatment.

Passing his sentencing, the presiding magistrate Che said the offence of permitting of un-licensed driving is punishable to a fine of not less than five hundred dalasi and not more than one thousand dalasi. He further told the court that the pain caused to the victims’ families is overwhelming and no law can bring the dead back to life.

“The Motor Traffic Act in its punitive section did not contemplate the consequences of this action. I shall therefore, not import the consequences. Therefore, Momodou Faye, you are sentenced to a fine of one thousand dalasi or in default to serve 1 year in prison,” the magistrate told the convict.

Meanwhile, the apprentice Alieu Jadama, is charged in a separate trial with rash and negligent driving causing death. He had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Faraba accident death toll rises to 14

March 31, 2022

By Amadou Jadama

Police prosecutors in the trial of Alieu Jadama, an apprentice driver charged with rash driving and negligence, have informed The Standard that another injured passenger had died bringing the total to 14.

The accident happened on March 4 in Faraba when a truck collided with a gele-gele.

Jadama is being tried for rash driving and negligence causing the death of all 14 persons. He pleaded not quality. In a separate trial, his boss recently pleaded guilty to permitting an unlicensed person to drive the truck.

The full list of people who perished in the accident reads: Momodou Jang Jallow, Sainabou Kujabi, Buba Sambou, Jainaba Jammeh, Alagie Jammeh, Amie Jarju, Kaddy Colley, Landing Jarju, Bobo Sambou, Olimatou Jarju, Musa Tamba, Adama Jammeh, Sulayman Sillah and Muhammed Sillah.

Meanwhile, Jadama, who was unrepresented in court, had made an application for bail arguing that he is currently sick and cannot sleep at night.

Even though the prosecution did not oppose the bail application and the court knows that the accused has a right to bail under 1997 constitution the trial magistrate Mendy ruled that it is the duty of the court to ensure that the public has the trust and confidence in them. She added that looking at the nature of the alleged offence committed and the number of lives lost, the court deemed it necessary to have the accused detained at Mile 2, pending the final determination of the case.

Truck driver accused of rash driving, causing 10 deaths

By Amadou Jadama on March 10, 2022

A young man has appeared at the Brikama Magistrates’ Court accused of causing the death of 10 people due to rash driving in Faraba last week.

Alieu Jadama, 19, is charged with a single count of rash and negligence causing death. According to the prosecutors, the accused in a rash and negligent manner caused the death of Kaddy Colley, Sulayman Sillah, Sainabou Kujabi, Alagie Jammeh, Jainaba Jammeh, Landing Jarju, Mamadou Jang Jallow, Amie Jarju, Bobo Sambou, Olimatou Jarju, Musa Tamba, Adama Jammeh and Muhammed Sillah. However, he pleaded not guilty to the accusation.

Meanwhile, senior magistrate Anna Mendy has remanded the accused at the Mile 2 Central Prisons for his own safety following the prosecutor’s claim that his life might be in danger.

“There were lot of lives lost and some family members are still angry after the incident. Also, the investigation into the matter is still ongoing,” said Inspector Kemo Y. Manneh.

The trial is expected to begin on the 23rd March. Last weekend, the police said 10 people were killed when a truck and gele-gele collided in Faraba.
