Posted - 31 Mar 2020 : 20:41:56 Justice Cherno Sulayman Jallow QC Chairperson of the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) Futurelec Building, Bertil Harding Highway, Kotu The Gambia March 31, 2020 Letter of appreciation for successfully completing the mandate of producing a draft Constitution for The Gambia Dear Justice Cherno Jallow:
The R2K Gambia chapter sends it greetings to you and your entire office. We write to register our appreciation to the CRC, its Commissioners, and the Secretariat for the sterling work they have in finalizing the draft constitution document.
This was a herculean task, because there were many complicated issues that the Commission had to grapple with, especially given the fact that constitution making is perhaps, the most risky proposition a country could care to undertake.
Nevertheless, the Commission under your leadership, showed professionalism, dedication to duty and determination to deliver a process that was credible, transparent, and inclusive, taking on-board a vast array of submissions and propositions.
GAMCORD was one of the first entities to engage the Commission, on 10 June 2019. We believe that our encounter served to enrich the process. We appreciate the privilege accorded to us to deliberate on the first submission of the draft Constitution. We continued our engagement with the Commission, even after those meetings, as we made further submissions to the process through the prescribed channels. We look forward to assessing this final draft, as delivered to President Barrow just yesterday.
We realize even though the CRC has delivered on its mandate with distinction, there are still many stages that we must undertake to make the draft constitution a living document. GAMCORD/R2K is ready to play that role. We take inspiration from the example set by the CRC, which you so ably led.
We shall remain steadfast in our advocacy work in ensuring that we have a Gambia made up of a citizenry that wish to be governed well, under a constitution that espouses human rights, popular participation, sound democratic practice and strong institutions supported by the rule of law.
We wish you and all the Commissioners the best of luck for the future, congratulating all of you once again, for the sacrifice and dedication to national duty during this important exercise of constructing our Constitution. You have triggered the monumental possibility of birthing a new nation, with all the promises of opportunity and new beginnings it entails. Sincerely, Right to Know (R2K) - Gambia. |
